Q: Can stress, depression and extreme anxiety cause weight loss?
can stress, anxiety and depression ( having all of them at the same time ) cause a loss of appetite and unwanted weight loss?

A: The short answer is yes. Think about your overall health and see a psychiatrist about these conditions. Follow up with a counselor. The weight loss and lack of eating can make you more susceptible to the stress, depression and anxiety which (apparently) precipitated the weight loss in the first place. All of this puts your general health at risk. I don’t tell you this to make you worry more, I want you to take care of your self and be well.

Q: If you are getting headaches from stress, anxiety and depression, can you get them when not feeling depressed?
I mean still get them because of the anxiety, depression and stress but not feeling stressed, anxious and depressed at the exact time you get the headache?

A: Yes, headaches can come when you are not even feeling depressed. This is a psychological function! If you force your depression to take a backseat without dealing with it properly, it is still there – and can come out in all sorts of ways from heaches, chest pain, etc.

General anxiety takes slightly longer to treat as it involves a process of bringing your bodies anxiety level back to normal often after years of high anxiety.

I have a blog about this. http://www.PanicRelief.biz

Q: Why does stress, depression, and anxiety make you lose weight?
Lately my mom and people that I haven’t seen or spoken to in a while have seen me and said that I’ve lost weight. I went through a hard time and I still am kinda going through a hard time with personal stuff and it’s caused me to have bad depression, anxiety, and stress issues. Why would this cause me to lose weight? When will I gain weight again enough to be my old size?

A: Stress usually make people eat more or less than they usually do. That’s one of the reasons. Some people’s metabolism work faster than normal when they are depressed or under stress. (I’m myself in that group.) It’s that simple and annoying. I’m underweight and trying to get back to my normal weight since the last December and can’t -even though I eat more than everyone I know-

Q: Can stress/anxiety/depression cause you to not eat a lot?
Yesterday I only ate a slice of wheat cinnamon bread, some chips and queso, Sun Chips, and a frappucino.
Today I’ve only eaten two slices of wheat cinnamon bread, a little ice cream, and a glass of water.

When my body tells me I’m hungry, I eat something but get full really quickly. I also have an Adjustment Disorder. It is a combination of depression and anxiety. I have a hard time dealing with stress and I get anxious really easily. I just talked to my therapist on the phone and she says that I am more depressed than she initially thought (I haven’t told her about the not eating yet). So I have an appointment to see a doctor who will determine if antidepressants are right for me.

Sooo…. is it normal to not eat when your stressed out or anxious? Should I be concerned? Has this ever happened to you?

Thanks in advance!

A: With your diet, I would have the same problems.

You are eating refined carbohydrates and dairy and sugar which your body is “starving” for brain food and your adrenal glands are exhausted. Your brain burns more protein in one hour of concentration as a body working out lifting weights at the same amount of time.

Adrenal exhaustion symptoms:
Anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disorders, ADD/ADHD, etc.

Lack of protein symptoms are:
Vertigo, lack of focus, lack of concentration, dizziness, etc.

Please, eat whole chopped salads, include a minimum of 6 to 7 different colored raw vegetables and eat small meals about 7 times a day with sliced whole turkey, chicken or fish.

The portions can be small, but must be healthy… Not empty calories that your brain and body cannot draw from.

No fried foods, no packaged man made foods.

No refined sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Absolutely No dairy!

Eat right long enough and your mental disorders will be gone. Takes about 4 months to get your brain back in balance. (life of a red blood cell is 4 months).

Q: Can stress, anxiety and depression cause strange thoughts?
I haven’t been diagnosed w/ depression, but I suspect I have it, as well as anxiety and I’m definitely struggling with stress…you put all these together, and sometimes I get strange thoughts (like especially when everything’s going smoothly, I force myself to think about something bad like dying or getting hurt) and I overworry and making myself sick and all that…is that typical of someone who battles all of this mind clutter?

A: im going through the same thing just try to stay busy and it will push the thoughts away

Q: What’s the best way to get rid of serious mental stress, anxiety & depression?
What’s the best way to “psych” yourself out of it in an almost “zen-like” state…or at least to where you’re normal?

A: Honestly, I don’t know that there is an way.
Medications help some, but they drive others to despair.
Exercise, good diet and controlled sleeping patterns are also known to help. Of course if you are physically disabled, cant exercise and don’t sleep, these don’t work so well.
I think talking to someone who will not invalidate the way you feel may help
Certainly see your doctor.
If you are school age, talk to your parents/teacher/school councilor etc
If you can confide in someone, again parents, plus friend, siblings etc
be safe, be sage

Q: I have gone through anxiety and depression and stress. How do i stop worrying so much?
I started all this as a nine year old. I am now 12 and still worried. Now i have insomnia, depression, anxiety, and stress. I get really worried about puking how can i stop being afraid?

A: I’d recommend firmly telling (not gently asking) your parents about these problems and ask them (not demand) if you can see a therapist to help you with these problems. If you can’t tell your parents, you can tell a guidance counselor at school. They’re required by law to be discreet (upon request), as long as you aren’t self-harming or suicidal.

Q: What have your experiences been with “alternative” therapies for low/moderate stress/anxiety/depression?
I would be very appreciative for detailed info on your experiences with anything relevant such as meditation, yoga, acupuncture etc.

I have seen therapists and taken medications, they help somewhat but as I said my case is not severe…just an underlying feeling of uneasiness and that “things aren’t quite right.”

My gut feeling is that some sort of meditation etc would help, but I also hear that some types are considered “scams” etc…please help!

A: I use Omega 3, 6 & 9, in addition to Vitamin B, D and a mega vitamin (Nature Made and GNC are my preferrable brands). Also, I do yoga and my favorite is Inhale on Oxygen with Steve Ross. It’s yoga to R & B and other mainstream music. Very “hip” and fun in my opinion. I write alot which seems to help also. I’ve listed some websites and my blog. Maybe you can blog about your experience too. It’s pretty fun! Also, consider your gender. If you’re female, your hormones go nuts once a month as we all know. Consider your overall lifestyle and see if there’s anything you could change/stop/consider. Sometimes, our situations can have an adverse effect on our emotional health because of stress/dissatisfaction/bad situation/etc. Self discovery is important for everyone. Good luck and I hope this was helpful. You can email me if you need to!

Q: Could my stress, anxiety, & depression be the reason why my menstrual period is 3 days late?
It hasn’t come yet. I’ve been very stressed out, depressed, & frustrated lately.

A: Yes, that is a major factor in irregular periods. Drink some green tea and maybe try to slow down and eliminate some of your stress if possible. Good luck.

Q: need a mental health day from work due to stress, anxiety & depression?
A doctor made an unacceptable comment to me.
My boss told me to be happy that I have a job, because if I didn’t have a job I would be on the corner begging him for money.
I reported him to HR. What should I do next?

A: If you are stressed..particularly at work….watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSFr01uAPtg and be thankful you are not this guy

Q: Can stress, anxiety and depression cause headaches even though you are not depressed at that exact time?
Even though you are not depressed, anxious or stressed at that time.

A: Yes. If you are stressed, anxious, and depressed often, you might as well consider yourself as being in a constant state of stress. Headaches are common with these emotions, and they do not have to occur when you are depressed or feel suddenly anxious.. maybe you can see a doctor and get something prescribed which will help you feel better.

Q: what is the difference between stress, anxiety and depression?
I am wondering if and how they are related to each other. My father tried to committ suicide by overdosing on heart meds. My mother starved herself to death later in life. I am anxious about events, cry often and sometimes feel hopeless. Do I have a problem too?

A: A good question! While each of these expereinces are unique in nature, they all can be intermixed.

STRESS is a response to any event which is perceived to alter or threaten our well–being. The experience of stress is a cognitive (thought) process.

How we view the events of our life is subjective and will influence its effect. Whether an event is viewed in a positive or a negative light, it will produce a response. For instance, going on a 1st date is exciting for some and terrifying for others. In both instances there is cognitive and emotional tension that can be met by a stress response.

ANXIETY is a cognitive function that can produce an emotional sense of discomfort, uneasiness and or distress.

It is based in apprehension, doubt or fear about whether an event will occur or the outcome of the event. Along with this is a lack of confidence in one’s ability to cope.

In its severest form, anxiety will produce panic attacks wherein an individual will experience sudden, discrete periods of intense anxiety, fear and discomfort.

DEPRESSION is a disorder of mood. It involves varying levels of sadness and despair and a loss of interest in previous sources of pleasure.

Levels of Depression can range from a case of the “blues” to severe, disabling psychosis. It can be expereinced for brief periods of time, or it can be an ongoing mental illness.

Everyone expereinces levels of stress, anxiety (worry) and depression during their lifetimes. The real question is how does it effect the quality of life overall.

If the tensions of life are overburdening, the stress response can produce physical symptoms ranging from headaches, muscle tension and insomnia to heart attack and stroke.

The same is true for both anxiety and depression. They can be a brief experience that are only minor discomforts, or either can produce dibilitating effects that have significant impact on living.

Mental health disorders are believed to have genetic factors; however this is only to a potential for a disorder. It is NOT a direct link.

Many individuals have parents or other blood relatives that have expereinced mental illness and have never manifested any disorders.

I hear that you are affected by the events of your mother’s death and your father’s mental health. Perhaps a few visits with a therapist or counselor could help you look at your life and come to terms with these past events.

Only you can ultimately know if you have a “problem”. Occasional feelings of hopelessness do not indicate depression. Sometimes life can be a significant challenge.

When you say you cry “often”, does this mean every day and to a significant degree, or are you responding to emotional circumstances where crying might be appropriate.

Does your anxiety about events keep you from moving forward with your life?

From a cognitive behavioral standpoint, I wish to remind you: you are in control of what you think and therefore what you “feel”.

For some more in-depth information on these topics, I invite you to visit my website:

http://www.my-counseling-site.com

And by all means, if you are having difficuties moving along with your life, take the time, invest in yourself and see a counselor or therapist. It doesn’t mean you are weak or “crazy”, but rather, it means you care about yourself and are not afraid to ask for help.

Good fortune.

Q: anybody try boxing to conquer stress/anxiety/depression?
been trying new stuff to get rid of it, anybody tried boxing and how did your depression/anxiety or stress go afterwards. thanks

A: I’ve never tried it, but the adrenaline/cortisol of stress is known as the fight or flight mechanism, so it should work quite well as you’d be using these chemicals for what they were designed for & they shouldn’t hang around & make you feel bad.
My personal favourite was to do some decorating & imagine that the bit I was sandpapering or painting over was the face of the person who had stressed me. I sure did a thorough job & somehow I always seemed better able to cope with them afterwards.

Q: What other ways are there to measure stress, anxiety and depression?
other than the usual questions and answers by your doctor?

A: If you’ve already done the usual tests that are offered by the doctor, you could try some online tests such as the one below.

However, in my experience both as a counsellor and someone who has experienced depression, the important thing is to get some understanding of how your feelings are having an effect on your life. Remember that having a diagnosis, measure or having someone put a label on your feelings, is not a cure in itself.

It’s likely that you know whether you are experiencing mental pain, and that you have a pretty good idea that this is having an impact on your life.

The important thing is to work out what triggers you off with your feelings, notice how you tend to behave when you’re feeling this way and get help. This may be in the form of medication, but this is not necessarily the complete answer.People who experience anxiety and depression often find their own ways to address the issues, that after all are personal and different between individuals.

These methods are usually a combination of a regular lifestyle activity, such as looking after how you eat, sleep, exercise and socialise. This might sound obvious, but actually difficult to do when you’re depressed and anxious- all the more reason to try to pay attention to it.The other area is to have some resources you can turn to when you’re having a crisis, and feel very anxious or depressed- this might be a helpline, a counsellor etc.

The fact you’ve asked the questions says to me that you’re worried about yourself. Go back to your doctor and tell them how you’re feeling, and specifically how this is affecting your life. It’s crucial that you let someone know exactly how bad it is for you- but please don’t rely entirely on medication.
