Q: anxiety depression?
im not sure if im depressed or is it just anxiety. i have had anxiety attacks before. everytime i think about my girl cheating or wondering why shes not talking to me (just randomly pops in my head and i cant get rid of the thought) i feel like i cant breathe as good and feel the anxiety in my chest (feels kind of cold and like ive lost air) is this anxiety depression…..? and is there anyway to fight this without the use of medication?

A: Sounds like anxiety and low self-esteem. I would say if you don’t want to use medication one option would be to ask yourself if your fears are valid. If they are well time to move on no reason to cause your self so much stress. If they’re not well maybe seeing a psychologist would be beneficial.

Q: Anxiety & Depression?
Ive been on paroxetine and beta blockers for years for anxiety & Depression. And they helped me very well, but i have just ecently had a really bad attack of anxiety/depression again, where i just want to cry,and i feel really scared again all the time with physical feelings of extreme tiredness, achy joints, and other unpleasant physical effects, even though ive still kept on my pills. What i want to know is has anyone heard of 5HTP? and what they know of it?

A: 5-HTP calms moods, relieves depression and aids sleep
5HTP is the direct precursor to serotonin, alleviating the harmful effects of worry and stress. Stress causes more serotonin to be released into the body, and the longer the period of stress the greater the danger of serotonin depletion. Low serotonin levels are associated with irritability, aggression, impatience and anxiety, and significantly decreased levels in serotonin have been found in suicidal patients.

Some patients that fail to respond to standard antidepressant drugs found relief in 5HTP. The benefits of 5HTP are very similar to those of L-Tryptophan, such as the assistance of sleep and alleviation of age related mental depression, as well as alcohol withdrawal. Unlike other antidepressants, such as L-Tryptophan which has other roles throughout the body, 5HTP affects the brain only.

Dosage:

Q: Anxiety/depression?
I’m only 15.. currently taking Metronidazole. I spoke to my doctor 2 days ago about some dizziness/nausea side effects.. which were normal. But now 4 days into the pill i’m feeling pretty bad anxiety/depression symptoms. Are these also side effects of the pill? If you’ve taken it.. have you experienced this? Any answers appreciated! Thanks!

A: You should discuss these symptoms with your doctor. some medications do cause these symptoms and it goes away but you shouldn’t risk it. Call your doctor immediately because it is the only solution. Good luck.

Q: Anxiety & depression?
I asked a question before, & received a few excellent responses. The question was.

I was diagnosed with anxiety, & depression in about 2001. I was wondering if anyone knows what limitations I would have as far as finding a job? I feel I can go back to working any job now, & am not sure if having this label over my head will stop me from getting a specific type of job? I understand there are certain places that might not like someone with this tag over their head. I haven’t gone back to work yet due to the fact I feel this tag will stop me from getting employment, & everyone I ask about it has no clue as to how this will affect my prospects fro employment. I know I could never get back in the military due to this, but as far as civilian jobs go I have no idea how this tag will affect me or what kind of job I would be able to get being I have this label.

I would like to add that I am on disability, but as of right now my doctor feels I could do anything I wanted to, & so do I. I am looking for work currently, but am unsure if having been on disability for anxiety, & depression is going to put a big red X above my head when looking for certain jobs. I guess I would like to know if anyone knows if this will work against me when looking for a job in a certain field. Would this hinder my chances at say getting a job working at a nuclear power plant? I have been out of the workforce due to this, & have healed myself, but how will this affect me, & what can I do to remedy this if it does affect me getting certain types of jobs? I am not sure as I said how this affects the ability for me to get a high paying job like I had before this all happened. Will having this mark on my life affect me from getting any job I want? Thank you for your time, & replies.

A: The only one aware of that “label” is you, and you put it on yourself. I suggest that you need to think of yourself in a different light, such as no different from any other applicant in that sense that you are just as alright as they are, probably more so because you have worked out your issues. You need not tell anyone you have been on disability, you can say you were on sabatical or any other excuse you care to make if you feel that that would “label” you, but honestly it doesn’t. It just means you took care of a problem you had.

Q: Anxiety/Depression?
I am seeing a dr in a week for anxiety/depression. i saw someone a few years ago but had to stop the meds cause i dont have insurance but i found somewhere new that is for people with no insurance.
so my question… what am i suppossed to say to them? i realize that they are dr’s but i dont wanna sound like a loser saying how i cant even handle going out in public because i get nervous, cant breathe and am depressed and miserable all the time. also i wouldnt call myself bulimic but i binge and purge anywhere from 2-5 times a week (anytime the bf is gone) – do i have to tell them ? I am going to feel so stupid

A: Well, they should be able to help you to know what to say by asking the questions that will help them know how to treat you. If you’re already feeling anxious and this appointment is making it worse, it’s even more critical that you let your doctor know about this. They can’t effectively help you unless you’re open with them. Be straighforward and they’ll guide you. They’ve heard it all before anyhow. And you’ll feel so much better!

Good luck!

Q: Why anger, anxiety, depression are on increase? What are the ways to reduce them?
anger, anxiety, depression are on increase and ill effects are just destroying the society.
World over steps have to be taken to control & contain these anger, anxiety, depression else it will be too late.

A: The best way to reduce your anxiety, depression, anger, and strees :

-Take controlled breaths. One simple technique is to breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold the breath for a few seconds, and then exhale through your mouth slowly. Do this for about 60 seconds a few times daily.

-Talk to a friend or acquaintance. It will help you feel connected and less anxious. DO NOT talk about what you’re anxious about – just have a regular conversation.

-Eat well. Food has more to do with our moods than we think. When our blood sugar is low, we can get crabby and tense. Don’t skip meals (especially breakfast), and choose foods with protein and complex carbohydrates, to keep your blood sugar levels even, instead of spiking and dropping.

-Cut the caffeine. Indulge in your morning cup or two, but drink only decaf beverages after lunch. Caffeine gets your adrenaline going, drains your body of calcium, and makes it more difficult to relax in the evenings. Even if you think “caffeine doesn’t affect me”, it can stimulate your adrenal gland and cause adrenal fatigue, which wears you down and affects your health over time.

-Exercise. Pent up stress can eat you up from the inside. Burn off all that steam the healthy way! Just going for a walk or giving a punching bag a good beating can help release endorphins and make you feel better.

-Get an at-home Yoga DVD. If you have trouble relaxing in the evenings before bed, pop in a yoga DVD and do a good series of stretches to help your body make the transition to rest mode.

-Avoid adrenaline triggers. If you’ve had an extra stressful day, ditch the scary books and movies, or news stories that get you all worked up. Even though you may enjoy them, the key here is to reduce adrenaline, not increase it!

-Get in touch with nature. Living constantly in a concrete jungle can wreak havoc on our emotional and physical health. Find a local arboretum, conservatory, memorial garden, or a quiet spot along a beach or river that’s off the beaten path. Some churches have prayer and meditation gardens, just for this purpose.

-Get a massage. Massage is proven to improve circulation and reduce stress. Even an occasional half-hour back and neck session can work wonders.

-Take a bath. Spend a little extra time to soak and let your muscles relax. Warm water is a natural soother.

-Listen to soothing music. Grab a couple of CD’s with “Sleep” or “Relaxation” in the title.

-Confide in someone trustworthy, like a priest, pastor, counselor, best friend, or help hot line. Someone who will listen and comfort, and provide wise council without judgement. You want someone honest who will help you consider your options, not who will tell you just what you want to hear. Some things we cannot change. Others, we actually have choices about. An unhealthy relationship. A hostile work environment. Trying to keep up a style of living beyond our means. Sometimes we need another perspective to find those areas of our life where our choices can actually reduce the amount of stress in our lives.

Q: What is Bipolar disorder? How is it different from depression/anxiety?
How is Bipolar Disorder different from social anxiety & depression. How do you tell the difference?? What are the different symptoms? How is it diagnosed? Is this disorder treated the same way as anxiety & depression?

A: Hi – Bipolar disorder is different from depression/anxiety in that our mood levels go from very low to very high. it’s called cycling and it can continue for long periods of time, or could disappear in no time and hen leving us change six or seven times in one day.

The low end is the hard part./ I get very depressed and just wantto sit and watch television and let everything else go. One can be completely housebound due to the depression of Bipolar, and then, suddently, in a day or two be out and about, all over town, making new friends, buying things they don’t need, interviewing for jobs they’d love to have, but could never fulflill. A few of us have ended up traveling across the country incognito, then suddenly appearing in the middle of an airport, stark naked.

Just remember, take the smalest dosage of the bipolar meds that you can get by with, learn to role with the ups and dows and find a good doctor. Also, sometimes, it’s difficult to work at a regular job, many of us work at home, or become involved in fine arts, like painting, music, writing, etc. Make the most of it, it could be a lot worse. just learn to undersand bipolar and then begin to anticipate what triggers certain moods.

I do want to add one more imoprtant item and that is the number of completed suicides in bipolar patients is rather high – that’s why it is so important to have a psych and a therapist – one to keep track of your meds and the other to keep aware of how things are going on an everyday level.

good luck,
welcome aboard
good luck,

Q: I have depression and anxiety, how do I become more motivated?
I know that exercise is one of the best natural remedies for anxiety/depression. It can also help me cut down on my meds… but I can’t seem to get the motivation… I have enough trouble getting out of bed in the morning or doing things I love to do, let alone exercise. Has this happened to anyone else? How did you overcome it? Gain motivation etc?

A: To some extent, you just have to suck it up and make yourself do it. You could get your meds adjusted some more so you have less depression and then you will have more energy and then exercise more & hopefully be able to cut back the meds more.

What I do (not that I’m perfect, hell, most americans don’t exercise even when they aren’t depressed!!) is make up an exercise music CD with my favorite loud, rocking hits and put it on really loud and just dance stupidly with a lot of kicking and stuff. I look like an idiot & I make hubby go away, but it really works!! I put some squats in there, too. The other thing I have done is created chores that have to be done, and they require lots of exercise, like keeping a vegetable garden, going deer hunting (hey, it saves us money!!) and burning wood (which also saves lotsa money). When I lived in the city, down in Los Angeles, I’d bike to the grocery store or walk to the corner store, and use a bus to go further, which meant a walk to the bus stop. Now I went the other way and I’m totally rural, and walking to the granary is a hike, even.

You might have to take those pills forever, depending on you. Some people have depression for all their lives. I hate it when people get on here and act like depression isn’t a bonafide medical problem. Heck, your brain is malfunctioning! It could be temporary and get better, or maybe it won’t, and you don’t have a lot of control over that part. Hopefully you will be one of the people who gets better!!

Oh, another idea is to get some social support. got a friend who will walk with you and make you go out? maybe even guilt you out for a few weeks until you get in the habit?

Summary:
force yourself
Listen to your favorite music, played loud
Create chores that require exercise
have a friend make you do stuff

Good luck!!

Q: Do people who suffer from anxiety and depression tend to be more intelligent?
I know people who’ve had depression and/or anxiety and most of them seem to be very smart people. Conversely, most of the people I know who aren’t very intelligent tend not to suffer from mental illnesses. In fact, most of the ‘not very bright’ people I know tend to be the happiest people I know.
Is there a link between high IQ and anxiety/depression?

A: I’m not sure it has anything to do with cleverness I think it’s more to do with how sensitive people are but then again I can see where you are coming from because the more sensitive a person then more a person thinks and you have to think to be clever!

Q: What would a doctor do for my anxiety/depression problem?
I think my anxiety/depression is the problem with my chest pain and getting startled easy. I worry about a lot of such, such as having to work and how stuff can get paid. What will be done. Sometimes I just want to take a drive to see my best friend an hour away. I think that could help me.

A: A Doctor would talk to you about the problem you have then they will more then likely send you to some counselling. Then they would prescribe you some anti-depressant tablets to help you deal with the problem.

Q: Anyone know of any herbs that actually work for depression, anxiety, and insomnia?
My friend takes remeron for anxiety depression and insomnia. He wants to stop taking it and go with natural remedies. Does anyone know of anything that works just as well as prescription meds? Any personal experiences? Please only answer if you are sure the herbs actually work for these 3 things

A: I think you should consult your own medical practitioner before embarking on any program that affects your health and well being.
My personal experience:
-Depression
Persistent depression is a serious disorder and you should see your doctor for treatment. In the meantime you might like to try a Licorice tea. Simply add some to any of your favorite herbal teas. Using up to approximately 3 cups of tea a day or more or ingesting larger amounts can produce headache, lethargy, sodium and water retention, loss of potassium and high blood pressure. At least eight Licorice compounds are monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors which are compounds capable of potent antidepressant action.

-Insomnia
Lemon Balm is a sedative as well as a stomach soother. Try a tea made with two to four teaspoons of dried herb per cup of boiling water

-Anxiety
Chamomile
The total list of benefit and treatments for Camomile is huge. Just a few come to mind, insomnia, anxiety, menopausal depression, loss of appetite, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, colic, aches and pains of ‘flu, migraine, neuralgia, teething, vertigo, motion sickness, conjunctivitis, inflamed skin. This may seem too good to be true, but it reflects the wide range of actions in the body.

Q: What should I do about my anxiety, depression and self harm?
I am 20 years old. I have been out of work for a year due to depression and anxiety. I have been self harming for six months and its getting worse. I am seeing a therapist because my parents are making me and its a waste of time. I am on 150mg sertraline daily. I feel sick every time I go out and and I can feel myself getting worse. I am considering suicide. I just dont know how much longer I can live like this.

A: I understand what you are going through as I have and still am going through similar things. Please, the first thing you must do is to tell someone you feel suicidal You MUST do this. Don’t worry what other people think put yourself first. If you can’t do it for you do it for me and everyone else who feels this way.
Second, the Therapist and/or therapy could be wrong for you. I went through a lot of therapists because I felt it was a waste of time. My GP was no help – he gave me a prescription and told me to come back in 2 weeks when I said I was suicidal. I went straight to Accident and Emergency and told them I was going to kill myself. They admitted me to the Mental Health Unit which is not as scary as it seems at first but once you are in there – the first time for me was 7weeks, you have space and can use this time to not think about much.I believe this saved me. When you leave the unit they follow up with outpatient appointments with a phyciatrist – my current one is the best medical person I have ever consulted. Unlike the private counsellors I saw over a 10 year period, the hospital phyciatrist really listened to me. After 2 years I was put on a DBT 1 year course which adresses self harm amongst other things. This was in London. Don’t know about the rest of the UK? the link following will show you:
http://www.dbtselfhelp.com/
http://bpd.about.com/od/treatments/a/IntroDBT.htm
and you can google DBT
Please write something here so that I know you are ok. If you need any clarification just ask.
H

Q: Why is my anxiety/depression the worst in the morning?
I have GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) and a touch of depression too and my symptoms are always worse in the morning. I usually wake up like an hour earlier than I need to and feel nauseous and anxious. I’ve just gone through my first real breakup and I am also taking citalopram to treat my pre-existing conditions. Any thoughts?

A: You probably just know you have another long, hard day ahead of you. Find something to look forward to and to get you through the day.

Q: what types of people are susceptible to anxiety & depression?
Just wondering what causes a person to get depression and anxiety disorders? Are some people more prone? What are the factors involved?

A: lack of adequate support while growing up.. it can really mess you up. on the flip side a person can go through hell and back and still hold their sanity if they’ve got loving family and friends to guide them all the way. I say “growing up” because things like anxiety and depression are usually formulated in childhood. Also, I think part of it is genetic. Like if your mother has depression, it’s more likely you will too, even if everything else is okay. that could be imitating behavior as well, on the other hand. interesting question in any case

Q: If you are getting headaches from stress, anxiety and depression, can you get them when not feeling depressed?
I mean still get them because of the anxiety, depression and stress but not feeling stressed, anxious and depressed at the exact time you get the headache?

A: Yes, headaches can come when you are not even feeling depressed. This is a psychological function! If you force your depression to take a backseat without dealing with it properly, it is still there – and can come out in all sorts of ways from heaches, chest pain, etc.

General anxiety takes slightly longer to treat as it involves a process of bringing your bodies anxiety level back to normal often after years of high anxiety.

I have a blog about this. http://www.PanicRelief.biz

Q: Anxiety and Depression treatment, who do I see?
If I have very high levels of anxiety and depression and want to talk to a doctor about treatment do I go see a regular doctor? My school has a free health clinic and I was wondering if I could use them to talk about it. I know my roommate is also suffering from something similar and he goes to that clinic a lot and has a prescription for Prozac but I’m not entirely sure it’s related.

A: Go the clinic hun ♥ x

Q: What is best option for someone with treatment-resistant depression/anxiety?
Let me tell you which generic answers I am NOT looking for: online support groups, special restrictive diets, traditional antidepressants/therapy, exercise, “miracle cure” drugs and herbs. ALL of these I’ve tried with limited or no benefits at all.

I’m only looking for input about SEVERE depression that hasn’t responded to any traditional methods of treatment. Is there any relief possible? I am 21 years old and I’ve lived with these problems all my life and I don’t wish to continue to do so.
I thought I was clear about what I had asked for, but after reading some answers I think it’s necessary to add some details, because many of these answers have no relevance to what I have asked.

I did not ask about your feelings towards religion or God. Furthermore, the quote “If you know God you will never be depressed” is downright offensive. That same person also seems to think I’m “allowing” myself to drown in gloom and that I’m not trying to help myself ?? Preach to someone else.

Another individual was arrogant enough to suggest that I am “choosing” to cling to my depression for drugs or some other reason. Depression is a medical condition, not a conscious decision. I certainly didn’t wake up one day and CHOOSE this lifestyle!

I’m a male, and I have already seen several psychiatrists and taken many rx drugs, after all, I did ask about treatment RESISTANT depression. I don’t have bipolar.

Thanks for ALL input, but PLEASE, SERIOUS/RELEVANT ANSWERS ONLY

A: Try Nor-Adrenaline treatment.

I think it`s not cleared with the FDA yet, but in Europe they are using EDRONAX.

Combined with an SSRI you get surprising results, but they go well on their own too.
Works for me beautifully (thank god, I`m not a US citizen).

However, remember friend, that the drugs are good for the symptoms. They don`t cure the disease.

And – and I`m totally f*** serious – 2 month on a beach in Thailand – but not the ones with the fancy resorts, but one of the remote ones (seek Haad-Yuan, in the island of Ko-Pa-Ngan). I`m dead serious, did much more to me than 5 years of medications.

But, most important friend: accept the fact you are sick, don`t expect it to go away (cause it won`t), don`t be ashamed with it, and tell all of the `smile to life and they will smile back..` and the `what have you got to be depressed about..` advisers to shove their smile so deep into their asses cause they don`t know the first thing on what you`re going through.

Q: Has anyone tried herbal treatment for anxiety/depression? Did it work?
I have been suffering with depression/panic attacks for a few months now and I am on Zoloft but I talked with a herbalist and they gave me Omega 3 to take 2 times a day and a liquid called Rescue Remedy, for anxiety. I’m just a little worried about all of it. If anyone has tried it let me know please.

A: I have been taking flax seed oil (high in omega 3 & omega 6 fatty acids) to help with my depression & it does work. With no side effects. Go for it!

I’ve also read research papers that claim that pharmacological doses of saffron are as effective as Prozac in treating depression, with none of the side-effects. Unfortunately saffron is very expensive.

Good Luck!

Q: Natural/herbal treatment of depression, anxiety, cloudiness?
I have been on various prescription medications in the last few years for depression, anxiety, and overall cloudiness [almost positive it's depersonalization disorder], but they seem to make me feel like a zombie, on top of numerous unwanted side effects.
What are some remedies, pills, or herbs I can take to help with these illnesses?
Also, I have been off of medication since March.

A: Some of the most popular natural products for helping with mood are St. John’s Wort, SAMe, 5-HTP (or Tryptophan), Rhodiola Rosea, and some stress-relievers like GABA or L-Theanine can help, too.
On the flip side, if you have taken any antidepressant recently, you may want to check with a pharmacist or doctor to see how soon you can safely take these… a lot of antidepressants interact negatively with a lot of supplements, especially mood supporters like these.

Aside from supplements, you can also try going out and doing things you enjoy, spending time with friends, or even having a good cry. If that’s not enough to help, maybe talking it out with a trusted friend or an objective third-party person (like a counselor).
Just remember, even though you might feel bad, it’s never as bad as it may feel. Everyone goes through tough times and we can all get through it… sometimes we just need a little extra help Good luck!

Q: I really need to find a treatment center for anxiety and depression in the chicago area PLEASE HELP.?
Yes I really need to find a treatment center for anxiety and depression in the chicago area “A live in” where i can stay and get help so please someone help 10 points for best answer!

A: Rush University Medical Center has a really good program.

http://www.rush.edu/rumc/page-1099611552138.html

Chicago-Read Mental Health Center is a good place also.
(312)832-1150

http://www.hospital-data.com/hospitals/CHICAGO-READ-MENTAL-HEALTH-CENTER-CH8.html

I don’t know if this applies to you, but if so the SAFE programs are really really good.

http://www.selfinjury.com/

If none of these work, most hospitals have inpatient mental health treatment programs.

Good luck.

Q: Any suggestions for homeopathic treatment of depression and anxiety?
I don’t want to go on anti-depressants until I exhaust all other methods. Does anyone have suggestions for homeopathic treatment of depression? I know exercise and proper diet are big factors but I don’t know what kind of diet to be on. Also, I’m in counseling/therapy right now to work on cognitive-behavioral technique, journaling, and starting to meditate. Now I just want to know if there are any supplements that work as hard as the Western medications.

A: Homeopathy will provide all you ask for, and more. Only, it sounds like you have a common misunderstanding of what homeopathy is and offers.

Homeopathy is a comprehensive healing modality, like acupuncture and chiropractic. A homeopath uses homeopathic remedies to stimulate one’s self-healing defense mechanism, whether a symptom manifests in the mind or body. It’s most similar to psychotherapy (in its feel, given the depth of listening and time a homeopath spends with you), only we help not only physical symptoms, but those in the mind and emotions. (Most physical problems are “somaticized,” an overflow from childhood emotional wounds we were unable to “process.”)

Homeopathy is complementary to the work you are doing with your counselor / therapist. Often, it helps you progress further, faster, and more freely. As with seeing a trained, licensed psychologist, however, you would need to similarly interview a “certified, professional homeopath” who does nothing but homeopathy. If you want to look into homeopathy further and need more help finding someone, e-mail me.

Take care, sweetie. You are looking in the right direction, and otherwise doing all the right things.

Q: What is the best treatment for anxiety and depression?
as well what meds. help the most with the least side affects generally speaking?

A: Medications are different and have different effects on different people. I’ve not heard about one from patients that was superior to others. I would recommend counseling before getting onto medication.

Good luck,
Dana (M.S. Counseling)

Q: Is there a medication/ treatment for anxiety and depression that does not have sexual side effects?
Lexapro, works wonderful for the anxiety and depression but my husband and I can’t deal with the sexual side effects. It’s not lack of desire it’s not being able to get off and my husband is doing everything right it’s just not happening!!!!!

A: Wellbutrin is an antidepressant that is known for causing less sexual side effects…talk to your doctor about it.

Q: Can you name the most effective treatment for anxiety and depression?
Please consider both psychotherapy and/or pharmaceutical approaches.

A: First, follow through with a psychological or neuropsychological evaluation which will determine underlying factors involved with the anxiety and depression and from there you will get solid referral to next step, whether it be individual insight-oriented therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, stress management techniques or psychopharmacologic therapy. Whatever the outcome you will have a firm foundation.

Q: What is the most effective form of treatment for depression and anxiety?
This question is for academic reasons.

What do you think of CBT and how does it compare to pyschotherapy?

A: zoloft works for me!
Electric shock treatment is good for severe cases too.
Cognitive behaviourial therapy is effective when used in conjunction with other treatments – ie medication and even electric shock therapy…each individual is different and will respond differently to medications…also dependent upon what ‘type’ of depression – eg – bipolar, clinical and anxiety type – ie- generalised anxiety disorder or panic attacks or whatever!!
Psychotherapy again..would be most effective dependent on type of depression/severity of depression and in conjunction with other management strategies.
good luck – i am no shrink but i do suffer from both.
I know my answer is not academic but i guess you need to google this one!

Q: are 3 years of psychotherapy and lexapro too long in the treatment of depression and anxiety?
i have been in therapy for 3 years and on 20mg lexapro for the same length of time. a psychologist friend recently told me that 3 years is too long a time to treat depression and anxiety. (i would say that i am a “run-of-the-mill” depressed individual, if there is such a thing.)

A: Hi Butch,

I honestly think you can’t put a time limit on getting over depression. You can only keep trying. I see a therapist every week. It’s a long slow process. It takes commitment and to have a good match to a therapist.

I told my therapist I didn’t feel I was progressing, she told me she sees it and it may take a while before I do. My therapist and pdoc also work together. She is what I call my voice of reason.

I have just been dx with Bipolar. That’s something that never goes away. But it is something that can be controlled with the right meds and tools you learn from a therapist. Read my profile, you’ll see what I mean.

Don’t let anyone, even a friend tell you it’s taking to long, everyone is different and has different issues there working on.

You should be proud of yourself for trying to get what ever is bothering under control.

Feel free to email me anytime.

Take care and never give up!

Q: How many Acupunture Sessions will I need before I am cured of Depression & Anxiety?
I am currently undergoing Acupuncture treatment for Depression & Anxiety. The Treatment is going ok, I seem to be really good then really bad, but have a lot of faith in Chinese Medicine so am bareing with it. I have currently had 6 sessions and have been great after some but bad after others. Can anybody advise how many treatments I will need to stabilize my moods, and to be free from Depression & Anxiety?

A: As things are getting better you should continue for at least another 6 sessions and then assess if you have improved even further; if you have then carry on, if your not it maybe that your accupunturist isnt the best and maybe you should consider seeing a different one.

Definately ask your current accupunturist about how much longer they think you may need.

From the sounds of things it seems to be helping you, if you have been depressed for a long time it may take quite a while for you moods to fully stabalise and you may continue to experiance mood swings for a while but this is just you body sorting itself out so dont worry.

The good news is that once your 100% well you probably wont relapse, especially if you have a ‘top up’ session every 6months or so after you finish your current treatment.

Please dont give up the treatment, chinese medicine is very powerful and much safer than conventional western treatments and more effective in the long run; so dont believe the sceptics who dont accept scientifically tested fact.

I wish you very success and hope you feel better soon. I had accupunture for a similar problem and it does work – just have faith

Q: I am looking for a natural treatment for OCD, Anxiety, and Depression?
I have tried prozac, but I do not like the side effects not to mention that I had a very bad allergic reaction. I am looking to try the natural approach first, but cannot afford to see a homeopathic doctor. Does anyone have any suggestions where I could find information or who I should ask about this. My therapist suggested a pharmacist but the pharmacist told me that the only solution is medication.

Thanks in advance

A: Your only solution is NOT medication. Of course a pharmacist would tell you that, so they can sell more medication to you.

I am 38 years old and from the time I was 10 years old until 2 years ago when I changed my diet, I also suffered with OCD, depression and anxiety.

The OCD was fairly mild, things like checking the iron was off 15 times before I left the house. I managed to get this under control by touching the iron once and saying loudly “I am checking the iron now and it is definitely off” and then when I had another urge to check it, I would just repeat my earlier wording in my head and be 100% sure that I had definitely turned it off. It is a long slog but after a while you can re-pattern your thoughts.

Hypnosis would probably help with OCD too.

My depression and anxiety were quite severe and at one stage 15 years ago, I went through an intense suicidal period.

My doctor kept trying to get me onto different medications but I resisted as I wanted to find a more natural way. I have seen many people trying to come off anti-depressants and it is not a pretty sight believe me.

So in the last 5 years I did the following:

I found things like reducing or completely abstaining from alcohol to be very useful, since alcohol is a depressant.

I found daily chakra meditation to be very helpful.

I found daily relaxation meditation to be very helpful.

I found bach flower remedies to be very helpful – the rescue remedy was very good for my anxiety

I found gentle exercise (yoga, swimming) to be very helpful.

I found reiki treatments to be very helpful.

All of the above did not cure me, but they certainly helped me to live a normal life and avoid medications.

However, the main saving grace for me was 2 years ago when I changed my diet.

I went from a SAD (standard american diet) to a Raw Vegan diet and my depression and anxiety completely disappeared.

It is quite amazing really. Sometimes I lose the plot and start eating cooked foods (i.e. – over the holiday season) and my depression and anxiety both return.

And when I eat Raw Vegan foods again, my depression and anxiety disappear.

Apparently this is quite common and many people have found their life-long depression vanishes once they change to a Raw Vegan diet, especially if you also consume certified organic produce.

There are lots of books, DVDs and websites dedicated to the Raw Vegan lifestyle, so maybe you should read up on it and seriously consider making the change.

Good Luck

.

Q: what is the difference between the treatment for anxiety and the treatment for depression?
what symptoms distinguish one ailment from the other?

A: A lot of the medications for anxiety and depression overlap because they are both caused by abnormalities of chemicals in the brain. As for distinguishing symptoms depression is more a mood disorder, the person who is unable to come out of a sad mood and is no longer interested in things that used to bring them pleasure. Anxiety on the other hand is more like someone who is on edge, has sweaty palms, a racing heart beat and is constantly worrying about things. As you can probably guess being anxious all the time can lead to depression and vice versa so a lot of people have mixed symptoms.

Q: Has anybody had any success for treatment resistant depression/anxiety on Lithium Carbonate?
I have been put on this by my doc to treat treatment resistant depression & panic/anxiety. I have been on many different meds before with very severe side effects, all of which lead my docs to suggest I am just sensitive to medication. After over a decade of trying to find a “pill that is right for you” I have lost trust and faith in any meds or the doc’s ideas.

Can anyone tell me whether they have had any really great successes with Lithium Carbonate?

I have done a S***load of internet research and have found really conflicting patient reviews & am now just really confused with all the different feedback. Alot more scary sounding side effects from this too.

I have decided to come off all my other meds now (with my doc’s permission) as my brain was just in a fog 24/7, I COULD NOT THINK 24/7, NOR MAKE ANY DECISIONS, even the simplest of ones. So even though I am still suffering from major depression & anxiety, I do feel I have a little bit more clarity of thought now I’m off the anti-deps, benzo’s & buspirone.

No stupid suggestions or comments thanks they are just NOT HELPFUL. I am merely seeking feedback from others who have been to hell and back many times over as I have been and finally found something that works for them…
Thanks people but I do NOT have Bi-Polar disorder. Apparently Lithium Carbonate is ALSO USED to treat (Treatment Resistant) Depression & Anxiety.

Well has anybody found by GOING OFF anti-deps, benzo’s & buspirone (anti anxiety) that they can ACTUALLY THINK CLEARER AGAIN, MAKE DECISIONS AGAIN & not feel so confused, brain in a constant 24/7 fog??? I have only been on Lithium for a couple of weeks now & off the other meds for only a few days…
FYI I have also had 2 different types of brain scans – one where they attached electrodes on my head & monitored my brain waves etc, the 2nd being a CT Scan where I went into a big machine that was like a big donut. Both tests came back fine apparently.

Note re hormones, I have had hormonal problems most of my life! & was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovaries years ago. I am on a monthly hormonal pill for that, which helps heaps, I would be even more of a mess without it!

The Psych docs discredit the above & think my problem is more post traumatic stress disorder, depression & anxiety (GAD)…am I just being too open/honest with them and everyone else??? I don’t know how to be any other way…
FYI 2 my doc has already suggested ECT (electro convulsive “shock” therapy) but that is just way too scary for me to even contemplate, considering there are many people who have got permanent brain damage from that! The meds have caused traumatic/severe enough side effects!!!

I also feel hugely disconnected from myself too, like all this isn’t really happening, like its all surreal, but I know in my head it is.

My Peer Support Worker says she knows what that feels like. Perhaps trauma after trauma builds up, takes its toll & adds up to this has all been just far too traumatic & my emotions & brain have shut off involuntarily, because I can’t will them back, so Post Traumatic Stress Disorder makes more sense. But I dont want just a label to understand, I want to know how to get out of it! Perhaps just alot of rest/sleep whilst coming off these meds & getting my body back in balance, exercise, good nutrition and LISTENING TO MY GUT INSTINCTS over anybody else…

A: I suffer from major depression and anxiety too, so I know a lot of what you are going through. When lithium carbonate is used for depression, it is usually used to augment the effects of an antidepressant. For example, one might take celexa plus lithium, but not lithium alone. However, as you probably know, we all react to psych meds differently. The only way to know for sure if lithium will help is to try it.

I tried lithium when I was on a bunch of meds, but it made things worse rather than better. So my doctor stopped the lithium in about about 4 to 6 weeks.

We are in a similar boat. I am seriously thinking of stopping all my meds, except for Klonopin. First I am addicted to it and, second, I need it to sleep. So I congratulate you on your success with stopping the meds, especially the benzos.

I also went through brain scans and they couldn’t find anything wrong. However, brain scans are mostly useful for detecting major problems like brain tumors.

In the last two years, I have improved a little when I started taking Lamictal (a mood stabilizer) and Abilify (an anti-psychotic). I am not suggesting these exact drugs for you. However, if you decide to go back on drugs, find a shrink who does a lot of research and thinks outside the box. Mood stabilizers and anti-psychotics may help you more than antidepressants.

Someone recently suggested EMPowerplus to me, a vitamin supplement allegedly useful for mood disorders. You are supposed to slowly taper of your meds, while increasing the EMPowerplus. You might look into this: http://www.truehope.com/default.aspx. Also check out EMPowerplus on youtube.com.

Please note: I have only been trying this product for 3 weeks and have not noticed any difference. So I am not recommending this to you, but it is something you might (or might not) consider.

You can email me if you have any comments or questions.

EDIT: My most potent antidepressant is exercise. You might consider starting with a little each day and working your way up. Try to join a health club or go to classes. It is very hard to motivate yourself to exercise when you have to do it alone.

Have you tried therapy and stuff like that?

Q: where can I get information about anxiety and depression symptoms?
i want to find a book or a website that talks about why anxiety and depressions symptoms happen etc… so i can understand what is going on in my body. i already know about the adrenaline and the fight or flight response.. but I would like to know stuff more in detail like why I can get headaches…drowziness etc,,, thanks

A: You could go to google…..or this website
http://www.nimh.nih.gov/index.shtml
good luck

Q: Why do PMS symptoms (anxiety, depression, bloating, etc) go away once you start your period?
I have been having mad anxiety and depression and bloating and cravings for a week and today my period stopped and so has my PMS. why does this happen? something with hormones?

A: It is definitely hormones. I get PMS before and after my period, but during, I’m a total kitten most times.

Q: Best antidepressant for Anxiety/Depression symptoms without sexual dysfunction?
Currently Taking Prozac, and have very little desire. Tried adding Wellbutrin and could not tolerate it. I’m a male.
I know Wellbutrin is a popular add-on, but I really felt un-nerved and could not tolerate the feeling for more than a few days. This was on only the 150 xl dose

A: I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I’ve been taking that for over two years, and it’s working very well for me.

The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active – and wanting to do things – while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can’t tell I’m taking any medication at all.

I found (before the Wellbutrin) I had the desire… the performance was just not as good. Wish you would’ve said was your problem with the Wellbutrin, could it have been too high of a dose?

Q: Will physical and mental symptoms of anxiety vanish after getting out of depression?
I suffer from weird mental symptoms of depression and anxiety due to problems i faced and still face since 3 yrs.. some of these symptoms are irrational thoughts and breathing problems.. what i want to know is that when i fix my problems and get out of depression, will these weird symptoms go?? Will i return normal? Please ppl who don’t know don’t answer thx I prefer answers from ppl who experienced these symptoms before.

A: Yes definitely you will return to your normal self. Anxiety & depression create a lot of weird thoughts, u can get out of the shower and all of a sudden your heart is beating fast, you find you can’t breathe properly, you want someone to help, but .. how will they understand??! The thing is, sometimes you can’t fix things by yourself, sometimes you need help. Sometimes you have to tell someone how you actually feel. Three years is a long time to carry it by yourself, let someone else help you! Think about someone you can trust; email them, text them, write to them. Tell them you need to talk to someone, tell them what you need or don’t need from them (eg lectures about right & worng). It took me awhile to trust, & when I did, I had to choose the right people. They are out there sometimes you just have to let them know. Be brave. Good luck xx

Good luck.

Q: What are the symptoms of anxiety-depression?
I have been having strange feelings and hope to find that they are normal anxiety feelings. I feel sad (wanting to cry), the latest is an ice cold feeling radiation inwards in my chest and some times my back and legs, is this normal? I have a permanent tic/pain in my left breast, I’ve had EKG’s and am fit as a fiddle. My main worry though is the chill I feel.

Q: Should I see a dr. for mild-ish depression/anxiety symptoms?
I get depressed fairly regularly but not severely, and I only feel completely ‘on’ or happy every once in a while. This generally keeps me from talking to/meeting people and I don’t seem to be getting anywhere like this. I don’t want drugs if I don’t need them, but I feel like I might need some help.

A: go see a therapist. if you dont get help the symptoms may get worse

Q: What are the symptoms of anxiety depression?
I’ve been having trouble with being able to handle things for the past couple years, and i’m wondering if there is really anything wrong with me. I’m having trouble concentrating on things, feel as though everything i have ever worked for and people i love are going to abandon me because i’m not good enough for them. There is a constant fear of them not liking me anymore. I’ve noticed that i feel alot more attatched to inanimate objects. I also have serious self-confidence issues. i don’t know the situation i am in, and if desired i can tell more of how i am feeling.(i feel selfish saying that).if anyone is a phycologist, then i would appreciate your insight.

A: I’m not a psychologist, but I am a social worker. You do sound like you may have some depression and/or anxiety issues. The good thing is that you have already started the road to recovery by reaching out for help. Both depression and anxiety are very curable. I have had both of these, and counseling really helped me.

Please know that when you are feeling like this is part of being down, and that things can get better. Your fears of not being good enough are very common to people who are depressed and people in general! I don’t think there are many people who have not privately felt that they are not “good enough”. Self confidence can be learned. In the meantime, be gentle to yourself – you deserve it.

You sound like you could benefit from going to counseling. There are many ways to do this. You can get a referral from a community information center or 211 if there is a 211 line in your area. If you do not have benefits at work, there are some non-profit agencies if money is an issue. Some faith communities have trained counselors as well. If you have a good relationship with your family doctor, you could also talk to them about this and see if they have some referrals. I benefitted a lot from a book called Feeling Good by David Burns which should be in most major bookstores and libraries. Of course, there are many books that you might find helpful. Best of luck to you!

Q: Will the birth control pill worsen anxiety and depression symptoms I’ve been having?
I suffer from OCD and depression. Will going on birth control make this worse or better? You see, my life has been a living hell: I graduated college last May in graphic design and have a job that’s only seasonal, I only work from April till November at Six Flags as an assistant manager doing airbrush art, so I’ve been stuck looking for a better paying job, full time in graphic design for the past three months when my current jobs closed for the winter. I’ve gotten to the interview stage in some instances, however, no luck. I even followed up and did just fine in the interviews, so that must make me a bad person for some odd reason since I didn’t get the jobs. I’m also starting my own biz with my friend. I still live at home with parents who help me out–but that makes me feel like a total loser since I still need help. I’ve been saving moneys like crazy. My college degree is a piece of sh*t, so I burnt it since I haven’t gotten my dream job yet.
So because of me being temporarily out of commission, my anxiety attacks have gotten worse–this is seriously having a negative impact on me and my boyfriend. My boyfriend complains to me cause I can’t slow down in life and have fun. Since I’m dating and we want to have sex in the near future, I’m going on the birth control pill. I’m on Lexapro antidepressant now and the people at planned parenthood said there shouldn’t be any interaction while taking the pill, but I’m still nervous that it won’t fully protect me against pregnancy cause I read in the pamphlet how it can lose effectiveness if taken with certain meds that are used to treat mental illness. I’m starting the pill this Sunday, so will it make my anxiety I’ve been having about my life worse, or will it actually help? I wonder if I’ll get mood swings? I’m sick of my boyfriend complaining to me about being a total nutcase, so I’m hoping that being on the birth control pill will actually benefit and reduce my anxiety symptoms?

A: The mental illness medications that are being referred to are actually certain anticonvulsants used for mood stabilization in Bipolar Disorder and Schizoaffective Disorder. So you’re OK in that regard.

The pill won’t affect your anxiety, but it can affect your depression. There are some pills that are less likely to affect depression, and I’m sure that the folks at Planned Parenthood gave you one of those – assuming you told them that you have mood problems.

Some people, even those with mood disorders, don’t notice mood changes with the pill. Some people find that the pill improves depression in a way because it “regulates” their hormones.

I wouldn’t worry much about it. Even if you have some problems, the pill gets out of your system quickly. Just finish your pack and call the doctor.

If you want to go the non-hormonal route, there is the option of a copper IUD called Paraguard. A little more expensive upfront, but it’s about as effective as sterilization while still being reversible. And yes, you can get it even if you haven’t had children. If the doctor tells you you can’t, put your gown back on and find a doctor who is willing to insert it.

Q: Has anyone had physical symptoms of anxiety and depression after miscarriage?
Before my miscarriage at 6 weeks, I had a “feeling” something was wrong. Right after the miscarriage, I stuffed my feelings deep down. After my first cycle, I started to feel achy in my feet and arms, physically numb and tingly, lost interest in things, had twitching and believed I myself was dying from a disease. A complete blood count and electrolyte panel were done (nothing) and the doctor told me I was suffering from anxiety and depression and I am now seeking counseling. Can the physical symptoms come first before you even realize your depressed? I guess I just feel that I was ‘right’ about the miscarriage, so I must be ‘right’ that something is truly physically wrong.

A: Yes! I had a miscarraige three years ago when I was in my second month and I know that I was an emotional/physical wreck and then some. I had to seek counseling and be put on anti-depressants for a few months. My doctor also told me that I would never be able to get pregnant again. The doctor was downright wrong. Thankfully I’m blessed and carrying a little baby girl now that’s due on september 15th

Q: Can depression/anxiety show itself in physical symptoms subconsciously?
Is it normal for people with depression or anxiety to not know whether or not they are experiencing a physical sickness or are just anxious/depressed? For me it feels like from the moment I wake up everyday I don’t feel well, especially in my stomach, and it seems like it is the physical symptoms that are causing me to be depressed and not depression to be causing physical symptoms… Does anyone know?

A: depression is most definitely reflected in our physical body, nausea, aches and pains etc are common complaints, and usually what drives a person to a doctor, who then diagnoses depression and refers them to a mental health therapist of psychiatrist for appropriate treatment.

Q: Is anyone else taking St John’s Wort for depression/anxiety symptoms?
wondering if anyone elso out there is taking this supplement to self medicate for depression and or anxiety and if its working or not

I started taking it for manly anxiety but I have depression too. I have been on prescription meds before but they didnt really work and some made the depression worse so Im turning to natural herbs and vitamins and hope they work….

A: I took it before and it gave me horrible stomach aches. I’m back on Paxil.

Q: Can a bladder infection cause symptoms of anxiety and depression?
‘Today it really hurts when I pee so I think I may have a bladder infection. I’ve also noticed that I feel a little down and anxious. Could it be related?

A: Yes. It definitely can.
By having a bladder infection you may begin to feel paranoid, depressed and anxious especially about anyone coming near you.
But, just because you feel this way doesn’t mean you have it, it may be all psychological. If i were you i’d see a doctor about this, because a bladder infection is pretty serious and nothing to guess about.

Q: Anxiety, Depression, ADD symptoms?
Well basically I think I suffer from all 3 of these illnesses. I just want to be sure that I do have them before I go to the doctor and try to get medication, so I don’t embarrass myself by being wrong about having these illnesses. I’ll list the symptoms I’m seeing for each illness below

Anxiety- Basically have panic attacks, short breaths, hard to breath, shaking, adrenaline pumping very hard, can feel my heart pound, face turns bright red. Usually happens when I’m public speaking, talking to a girl I like, or am in an awkward/embarrassing situation

Depression- Mood swings that make me very sad. Emotional at times. Cry myself to sleep some night, not happy at all. Suicidal thoughts (almost attempted many times), feel like nothing to live for, lonely, would rather stay in my house alone then go out on a Friday night.

ADD- can’t focus, can’t study or do work at all. Education (such as math) doesn’t come easy to me at all.

So what do you all think? Do you think I suffer from all 3 of these? I don’t want to sound like I’m “assuming the worst” or anything when I talk to the doctor.

A: You are listing classic symptoms of anxiety and depression. The lack of focus and concentration a(inability to study) re symptoms of both anxiety and depression.

Lots of people have trouble with math, but if you get the proper treatment for anxiety and depression, you might get thru it.

Good luck.

Q: What should I do about my panic/anxiety/depression symptoms?
I’m a 25 year old master’s student trying to finish up my thesis. I have had procrastination problems all my life and though I thought I was on track I am feeling more and more like I’m running out of time and am getting really scared and depressed.

Lately I’ve had a very hard time doing ANYTHING at all, especially since I feel like whenever I try to get something done I work my a** off and I feel like I don’t get anywhere, no matter how hard I try. So then I just quit and don’t do anything for awhile, and I feel like I can’t function. Then when I finally start to try again, again I get nowhere and I give up some more. I feel like I’m so behind and I’ve started to have frightening and irrational thoughts. I’m already past the deadline of when I’m supposed to hand in the next draft of my thesis and I’m terrified that my advisor is going to be furious with me and I’m convinced that “they” are going to take away my fellowship that I got for a Ph.D. study later this summer. I’m convinced that I’m a failure and I suck and I don’t deserve the fellowship or to go on for a Ph.D. and I’m sure that people are going to “discover” this and then take it away from me and I’ll have no future.

I know these thoughts are somewhat irrational but I feel like they’re taking over my life. I have been trying to fix my procrastination problem for months now and I feel like I’ve gotten NOWHERE. I have been on medication for depression, found out I had sleep apnea and am trying to get used to the BiPAP machine they gave me, but it’s hard to do and I’m freaking out because I feel like I don’t have time to get used to it and I want it to start working perfectly RIGHT NOW, but it won’t.

I’ve had four panic attacks in the past 5 days where I start crying uncontrollably, screaming, choking, almost throwing up, hyperventilating, shaking, can’t focus, etc. I am NOT suicidal nor have I ever been suicidal. I just want to get better but I have no idea how to get any help. I’m wondering if I should go to a clinic or hospital but I’m afraid about the legal issues or red tape involved, plus I feel guilty like I’m just using it as an escape mechanism to get sympathy or more time to finish my thesis. That makes me feel like a slack-off, lazy failure again and just makes me more upset and makes it harder to get any work done. I feel like a frozen zombie half the time and I’m completely miserable. I keep telling myself it will get better but it just keeps getting worse.

I keep thinking it can’t get any worse but it does. Lately I’ve stopped even trying to think things are going to get better because it feels like some kind of a jinx, because every time I start to feel motivated or like things are finally taking a turn for the positive, it never lasts and things only get worse again.

Does anyone have any advice for this? Any way for me to get motivated, stop being scared, etc? Has anyone had similar issues? Is this just “normal” for someone trying to finish up a thesis? I’m going to talk to my psychologist tomorrow but tonight I’m trying to work on my thesis some more but I just feel like I can’t do it, and I’m desperate for any kind of advice/support as soon as possible. I’m embarrassed to talk to friends/family about this because I don’t want anybody to find out how behind I am right now.

Please help! Okay I know this has probably been a pointless thing to ask seeing as I’m going to see my psychologist tomorrow but I just needed to vent/get this out in the open, I don’t know. Anyway, thanks…

A: Anxiety and panic can and does cause you, to have and do all the things you have been doing. That along with the sleep apnea which does make things worse.

I’ve had an anxiety disorder for many years, that’s how I know this.

You do need to see a mental health professional for treatment for this. This is a medical condition just like any other. You need to stop beating yourself up over this. You didn’t ask for it.

When we panic we tend to behave like “deers in the headlights” We stop doing the things we know we need to do because we are just so overwhelmed by it all.

It’s a vicious cycle that most people with panic and depression fall into.

My guess is that you are probably a perfectionist and that also feeds into the anxiety and panic.

Forgive yourself for the mess you are in right now, move forward starting tomorrow by seeing the psychologist and do not rule out seeing a psychiatrist for some medication. Medication has helped me.

About your sleep apnea if using the c pap is overwhelming right now try sleeping in a more sitting like position and use those breath right nasal strips. The do help somewhat.

Tomorrow you will be able to think more clearly, tonight write down all your symptoms both physical and emotional because the chances of you remembering everything ,once you get to the psychologist are not good, we all forget important things once we get to the doctor or therapist.

It’s also easier for them to read your symptoms first and then ask questions.

It doesn’t feel like it now but, things really will work out.

Q: Can stress, depression and extreme anxiety cause weight loss?
can stress, anxiety and depression ( having all of them at the same time ) cause a loss of appetite and unwanted weight loss?

A: The short answer is yes. Think about your overall health and see a psychiatrist about these conditions. Follow up with a counselor. The weight loss and lack of eating can make you more susceptible to the stress, depression and anxiety which (apparently) precipitated the weight loss in the first place. All of this puts your general health at risk. I don’t tell you this to make you worry more, I want you to take care of your self and be well.

Q: Why does stress, depression, and anxiety make you lose weight?
Lately my mom and people that I haven’t seen or spoken to in a while have seen me and said that I’ve lost weight. I went through a hard time and I still am kinda going through a hard time with personal stuff and it’s caused me to have bad depression, anxiety, and stress issues. Why would this cause me to lose weight? When will I gain weight again enough to be my old size?

A: Stress usually make people eat more or less than they usually do. That’s one of the reasons. Some people’s metabolism work faster than normal when they are depressed or under stress. (I’m myself in that group.) It’s that simple and annoying. I’m underweight and trying to get back to my normal weight since the last December and can’t -even though I eat more than everyone I know-

Q: Can stress/anxiety/depression cause you to not eat a lot?
Yesterday I only ate a slice of wheat cinnamon bread, some chips and queso, Sun Chips, and a frappucino.
Today I’ve only eaten two slices of wheat cinnamon bread, a little ice cream, and a glass of water.

When my body tells me I’m hungry, I eat something but get full really quickly. I also have an Adjustment Disorder. It is a combination of depression and anxiety. I have a hard time dealing with stress and I get anxious really easily. I just talked to my therapist on the phone and she says that I am more depressed than she initially thought (I haven’t told her about the not eating yet). So I have an appointment to see a doctor who will determine if antidepressants are right for me.

Sooo…. is it normal to not eat when your stressed out or anxious? Should I be concerned? Has this ever happened to you?

Thanks in advance!

A: With your diet, I would have the same problems.

You are eating refined carbohydrates and dairy and sugar which your body is “starving” for brain food and your adrenal glands are exhausted. Your brain burns more protein in one hour of concentration as a body working out lifting weights at the same amount of time.

Adrenal exhaustion symptoms:
Anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disorders, ADD/ADHD, etc.

Lack of protein symptoms are:
Vertigo, lack of focus, lack of concentration, dizziness, etc.

Please, eat whole chopped salads, include a minimum of 6 to 7 different colored raw vegetables and eat small meals about 7 times a day with sliced whole turkey, chicken or fish.

The portions can be small, but must be healthy… Not empty calories that your brain and body cannot draw from.

No fried foods, no packaged man made foods.

No refined sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Absolutely No dairy!

Eat right long enough and your mental disorders will be gone. Takes about 4 months to get your brain back in balance. (life of a red blood cell is 4 months).

Q: Can stress, anxiety and depression cause strange thoughts?
I haven’t been diagnosed w/ depression, but I suspect I have it, as well as anxiety and I’m definitely struggling with stress…you put all these together, and sometimes I get strange thoughts (like especially when everything’s going smoothly, I force myself to think about something bad like dying or getting hurt) and I overworry and making myself sick and all that…is that typical of someone who battles all of this mind clutter?

A: im going through the same thing just try to stay busy and it will push the thoughts away

Q: What’s the best way to get rid of serious mental stress, anxiety & depression?
What’s the best way to “psych” yourself out of it in an almost “zen-like” state…or at least to where you’re normal?

A: Honestly, I don’t know that there is an way.
Medications help some, but they drive others to despair.
Exercise, good diet and controlled sleeping patterns are also known to help. Of course if you are physically disabled, cant exercise and don’t sleep, these don’t work so well.
I think talking to someone who will not invalidate the way you feel may help
Certainly see your doctor.
If you are school age, talk to your parents/teacher/school councilor etc
If you can confide in someone, again parents, plus friend, siblings etc
be safe, be sage

Q: I have gone through anxiety and depression and stress. How do i stop worrying so much?
I started all this as a nine year old. I am now 12 and still worried. Now i have insomnia, depression, anxiety, and stress. I get really worried about puking how can i stop being afraid?

A: I’d recommend firmly telling (not gently asking) your parents about these problems and ask them (not demand) if you can see a therapist to help you with these problems. If you can’t tell your parents, you can tell a guidance counselor at school. They’re required by law to be discreet (upon request), as long as you aren’t self-harming or suicidal.

Q: What have your experiences been with “alternative” therapies for low/moderate stress/anxiety/depression?
I would be very appreciative for detailed info on your experiences with anything relevant such as meditation, yoga, acupuncture etc.

I have seen therapists and taken medications, they help somewhat but as I said my case is not severe…just an underlying feeling of uneasiness and that “things aren’t quite right.”

My gut feeling is that some sort of meditation etc would help, but I also hear that some types are considered “scams” etc…please help!

A: I use Omega 3, 6 & 9, in addition to Vitamin B, D and a mega vitamin (Nature Made and GNC are my preferrable brands). Also, I do yoga and my favorite is Inhale on Oxygen with Steve Ross. It’s yoga to R & B and other mainstream music. Very “hip” and fun in my opinion. I write alot which seems to help also. I’ve listed some websites and my blog. Maybe you can blog about your experience too. It’s pretty fun! Also, consider your gender. If you’re female, your hormones go nuts once a month as we all know. Consider your overall lifestyle and see if there’s anything you could change/stop/consider. Sometimes, our situations can have an adverse effect on our emotional health because of stress/dissatisfaction/bad situation/etc. Self discovery is important for everyone. Good luck and I hope this was helpful. You can email me if you need to!

Q: Could my stress, anxiety, & depression be the reason why my menstrual period is 3 days late?
It hasn’t come yet. I’ve been very stressed out, depressed, & frustrated lately.

A: Yes, that is a major factor in irregular periods. Drink some green tea and maybe try to slow down and eliminate some of your stress if possible. Good luck.

Q: need a mental health day from work due to stress, anxiety & depression?
A doctor made an unacceptable comment to me.
My boss told me to be happy that I have a job, because if I didn’t have a job I would be on the corner begging him for money.
I reported him to HR. What should I do next?

A: If you are stressed..particularly at work….watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSFr01uAPtg and be thankful you are not this guy

Q: Can stress, anxiety and depression cause headaches even though you are not depressed at that exact time?
Even though you are not depressed, anxious or stressed at that time.

A: Yes. If you are stressed, anxious, and depressed often, you might as well consider yourself as being in a constant state of stress. Headaches are common with these emotions, and they do not have to occur when you are depressed or feel suddenly anxious.. maybe you can see a doctor and get something prescribed which will help you feel better.

Q: what is the difference between stress, anxiety and depression?
I am wondering if and how they are related to each other. My father tried to committ suicide by overdosing on heart meds. My mother starved herself to death later in life. I am anxious about events, cry often and sometimes feel hopeless. Do I have a problem too?

A: A good question! While each of these expereinces are unique in nature, they all can be intermixed.

STRESS is a response to any event which is perceived to alter or threaten our well–being. The experience of stress is a cognitive (thought) process.

How we view the events of our life is subjective and will influence its effect. Whether an event is viewed in a positive or a negative light, it will produce a response. For instance, going on a 1st date is exciting for some and terrifying for others. In both instances there is cognitive and emotional tension that can be met by a stress response.

ANXIETY is a cognitive function that can produce an emotional sense of discomfort, uneasiness and or distress.

It is based in apprehension, doubt or fear about whether an event will occur or the outcome of the event. Along with this is a lack of confidence in one’s ability to cope.

In its severest form, anxiety will produce panic attacks wherein an individual will experience sudden, discrete periods of intense anxiety, fear and discomfort.

DEPRESSION is a disorder of mood. It involves varying levels of sadness and despair and a loss of interest in previous sources of pleasure.

Levels of Depression can range from a case of the “blues” to severe, disabling psychosis. It can be expereinced for brief periods of time, or it can be an ongoing mental illness.

Everyone expereinces levels of stress, anxiety (worry) and depression during their lifetimes. The real question is how does it effect the quality of life overall.

If the tensions of life are overburdening, the stress response can produce physical symptoms ranging from headaches, muscle tension and insomnia to heart attack and stroke.

The same is true for both anxiety and depression. They can be a brief experience that are only minor discomforts, or either can produce dibilitating effects that have significant impact on living.

Mental health disorders are believed to have genetic factors; however this is only to a potential for a disorder. It is NOT a direct link.

Many individuals have parents or other blood relatives that have expereinced mental illness and have never manifested any disorders.

I hear that you are affected by the events of your mother’s death and your father’s mental health. Perhaps a few visits with a therapist or counselor could help you look at your life and come to terms with these past events.

Only you can ultimately know if you have a “problem”. Occasional feelings of hopelessness do not indicate depression. Sometimes life can be a significant challenge.

When you say you cry “often”, does this mean every day and to a significant degree, or are you responding to emotional circumstances where crying might be appropriate.

Does your anxiety about events keep you from moving forward with your life?

From a cognitive behavioral standpoint, I wish to remind you: you are in control of what you think and therefore what you “feel”.

For some more in-depth information on these topics, I invite you to visit my website:

http://www.my-counseling-site.com

And by all means, if you are having difficuties moving along with your life, take the time, invest in yourself and see a counselor or therapist. It doesn’t mean you are weak or “crazy”, but rather, it means you care about yourself and are not afraid to ask for help.

Q: anybody try boxing to conquer stress/anxiety/depression?
been trying new stuff to get rid of it, anybody tried boxing and how did your depression/anxiety or stress go afterwards. thanks

A: I’ve never tried it, but the adrenaline/cortisol of stress is known as the fight or flight mechanism, so it should work quite well as you’d be using these chemicals for what they were designed for & they shouldn’t hang around & make you feel bad.
My personal favourite was to do some decorating & imagine that the bit I was sandpapering or painting over was the face of the person who had stressed me. I sure did a thorough job & somehow I always seemed better able to cope with them afterwards.

Q: What other ways are there to measure stress, anxiety and depression?
other than the usual questions and answers by your doctor?

A: If you’ve already done the usual tests that are offered by the doctor, you could try some online tests such as the one below.

However, in my experience both as a counsellor and someone who has experienced depression, the important thing is to get some understanding of how your feelings are having an effect on your life. Remember that having a diagnosis, measure or having someone put a label on your feelings, is not a cure in itself.

It’s likely that you know whether you are experiencing mental pain, and that you have a pretty good idea that this is having an impact on your life.

The important thing is to work out what triggers you off with your feelings, notice how you tend to behave when you’re feeling this way and get help. This may be in the form of medication, but this is not necessarily the complete answer.People who experience anxiety and depression often find their own ways to address the issues, that after all are personal and different between individuals.

These methods are usually a combination of a regular lifestyle activity, such as looking after how you eat, sleep, exercise and socialise. This might sound obvious, but actually difficult to do when you’re depressed and anxious- all the more reason to try to pay attention to it.The other area is to have some resources you can turn to when you’re having a crisis, and feel very anxious or depressed- this might be a helpline, a counsellor etc.

The fact you’ve asked the questions says to me that you’re worried about yourself. Go back to your doctor and tell them how you’re feeling, and specifically how this is affecting your life. It’s crucial that you let someone know exactly how bad it is for you- but please don’t rely entirely on medication.

My youngest step son was put on this med. almost five years ago. When he takes it he is calm and sleepy. When it wears off before the next dose he gets chatty until dose time. Not all people get all side effects. A drug works for some people and not for others. Keep track of how you do on any and all drugs so you can give good feedback to your doctor to help get on the right meds. for you and the right dosage. God bless my friend. I hope this helps. Love, Makwa/Jo:)

Dosage:

Q: anxiety, depression…..?
i know i need help…. but i really really dont know what to do.
i dont want to talk to a stranger. and people i know jsut dont get it.

i really feel like im loosing my mind i just want it to STOP i dont think i can deal with it going on and on but i cant talk to a stranger……

A: I have been through a similar feeling myself when my brother died.
I felt like i was going out of my mind, that nobody understood and that i just didnt want to go through this any more.
After 2 years my husband couldnt cope and rang a phsyciatrist who made me call him to make an appointment. I can honestly say it was the hardest thing i ever did.
I didnt want to go but my husband drove me and sat in the care for an hour while i was in the room.
It helped me so much. I still suffer depressive episodes and anxiety attacks sometimes but my head feels clearer, like i can rationlise thoughts. I went for a year and every week was so difficult, but i did it and it helped me.
I have a better relationship my husband and family. cope with making decisions.

It will be so hard but you need to talk to a professional.

Good luck!!

Q: In your experience, has cannabis treated your anxiety and/or depression?
I am thinking of getting medication for what I currently consider as moderate depression and anxiety. I believe that the more natural, the better when it comes to depression and anxiety medication. I always read about anxiety and depression medication as having some pretty serious side effects. That is why I’ve been thinking about getting a cannabis permit (I’m in CA) to help me relax a little.

I am interested in a few of your experiences with weed and anxiety/depression and if it helped you.

I don’t want it if it won’t help me.

A: Cannabis has been known to worsen anxiety in those suffering from mental disorders. The first study in my sources says “Weekly or more frequent cannabis use in teenagers predicted an approximately twofold increase in risk for later depression and anxiety”. The second study says “Frequent cannabis use is associated with increased AD in young adults independently of whether the person also uses other illicit drugs.”

Cannabis has also been found to be a trigger for psychoses. 3rd study: “cannabis is an independent risk factor for schizophrenia.”

4th study: “lifetime cannabis dependence is significantly associated with an increased risk of panic attacks.”

As such, I would not recommend that anyone with any history of mental disorders would use cannabis.

Q: What is a good anxiety/depression medication that is cheap?
Well I dont have insurance and right now I’m on Wellbutrin XL 150 mg. But when I go out the anxiety dont seem to be any better so now I am going to be taking two pills a day. So that would be like 300 mg. But I’m thinking bout talking to my doctor about gettting on a brand that is basically for social anxiety and depression. But I have no insurance and I can’t spend a million dollars on pills. So what would be a good brand for me to get on? Non-generic and generic brand? Please Help..

A: wellbutrin is get for some people in kick depression, but because of the nuerotrasmitters it hits, its not good for anxiety at all. you really need to hit serotonin if anxiety is a big component for you. lexapro is the stronger serotognic antidepressant, and has the fewest side effects (less likely to gain weight) and it seems to help most with anxiety. however without insurance it costs about 120 dollars a month. a second line of choice would be a generic drug, like paxil (paroextine), prozac (fluoxetine), celexa (citapram) zoloft, or luvox (fluvoxetine). prozac is generally considered second best after lexapro, because fewer people gain weight on it. also, a lot of medication works for a couple of years and then just stops working, but prozac seems to have been working for some people for over then years continously.

Q: Can anxiety cause depression and vice versa?
I have anxiety problems, but I get depressed sometimes on and off. Just wondered if the two are linked? I made my doctor make me a referral to a psychiatrist, but I don’t know if it’s going to do anything for me or I believe it won’t. The doctor made a referral for my OCD, but will they also help me out with other anxiety/depression and life issues?
The other problem is my mother does not believe in psychologists or psychiatrists, and that I should be able to deal with things on my own…but I just don’t feel like that’s the case.

A: I had anxiety and depression for over 15 years. I had everything medical done for me. Psychiatrist, meds, eatting right, super vitamins, exercise, support groups, you name it. Nothing gave me real peace.
then, 3 1/2 years ago, a freind invited me to a bible study group. I thought I knew the bible pretty well. Turns out I knew facts, but did not understand grace. I thought things like “God helps those who help themselves’ was in the Bible. It was not, that was Bengermin Franklin. In an amazing moment, I recieved the unconditional love and acceptance of Jesus. I stopped trying to be in control and I trusted this amazing loving God who keeps me in perfect peace. I put the word of God in my heart instead of worry and repeated it when I was tempted to worry. I was overwhelmed with such a sence of well being and peace and I will never go back. I got off 17 medications, my depression lifted instantly, and my anxiety greatly decreased. Also, in three months, my income trippled and I fell in love with a wonderful man whom I later married. Gods real love- not what I hear on t.v. preachers or church, but the real presence of God entered into my soul. I am on a journey of greater peace as I trust in Him. Yes, I still have feelings of fear at times, but Gods Word brings me back to a safe place. Depression is caused by anxiety. Once I learned that I can trust in Gods goodness and faithfulness, Everyhthing came together.
I am holding on to free speach and the sure knowledge of one who was in your shoes and got healed. If you are tired of christains who want you to experience Gods love, remember it feels like I thought I would feel if I ever won 100 million dollars, and I am trying to give it all away! I got further teachings and counseling on how to live a peacefull life from mentors at a church I later found. For free.
Try going to Alpha. Good place to start.

I hope you get feeling better and with HOPE!!!

Q: Natural remedies for anxiety/depression and excessive worry?
I am suffering from post partum depression and the Percocet really makes me relax and feel like I have hope. I was given it for my c-section. I was wondering if there are any natural things I could take that could have a similar effect. Not anything bogus or fake, but something that actually helps with depression and anxiety. Something to make me relax. Any help is greatlyaappreciated I want to enjoy my little boy!

A: All I can suggest is St Johns Wort but you have to take it everyday for it to work and it doesn’t even work on some people. But you can give it a try. Before you take anything though, I still recommend talking to your doctor about it if you’re taking other medication.

Q: What foods and supplements can I take to help me with anxiety, depression, and poor concentration?
I already know about exercise and anti-anxiety meds. I’ll consider all that stuff in due time. My mom suggested that I should eat flax seeds. The problem I have with that is that I have no way of knowing whether they are safe to eat. If you are going to suggest that I take some people, please ensure that it is “China free,” so to speak.

A: Green leaf lettuce and green leafy vegies are good as they are high in B-Vitamins which is essencial for your nervous system and brain and all systems really.
Foods high in trytophan are good like Bananas, avacados and samon.
Avoid carbonated drinks as they rob the body of calcium, magnesium and Bs. Also avoid white flour sugar and caffiene.
A good product to take as well is BTotal solution. It’s a liquid B vitamin you dispense under your tongue.
Also have your D vitamin level checked by your doctor. That can affect your moods and nerves drastically.

Q: What would be the best medication to treat social anxiety, depression, and fatigue together?
I have finally admitted/realized my difficulties with these issues. I want to get help, but am not sure exactly what kind of drug I should try. Of course my Dr. will work with me on this decision but I would like to get some feedback from users. He previously put me on xanax for the anxiety and it definately lessened after popping the pill, but I don’t like how it makes me feel fatigued and loopy. I realize there is no wonder drug but I would like to know if there is any one drug to combat all three conditions…anxiety, depression, and fatigue. All this, keeping in mind that I really don’t want to have the sex drive or weight gain issues as I already have a low sex drive and have recently gained 10 pounds. Any HELP is appreciated…so while I do respect and usually agree with all you anti-medication people…I have made the decision to try some so please spare me your disapproving lectures. Please help! Thank you all!

A: Pls call your dr for a referral & make an appt re your depression with a psychiatrist. He will know which drug to take in addition to the anti-anxiety drug. Sometimes it takes awhile to find the right drug but whatever will work would need a prescription. Avoid an over-the-counter drug as you don’t know how it would react with the drug you are taking.

I would ask for a referral to a psychiatrist. After the initial visit you could make 15 min appts on an as needed basis. A family dr is not experienced in finding the proper meds for psychiatric illnesses.

Good luck to you. Don’t waste time by putting it off. The sooner you get started the sooner you’ll get well. From one who knows.

Q: Can you get discriminated for an anxiety/depression disorder that has been treated with medicines?
I applied for a postion working for the government. I passed the drug and physcial exam except for the medicines that I am taking. I received a phone call from the company because they want more information about the medicines that I take for anxiety (for panic attacks which then resulted in depression because I had no idea what that was and was in denial about it). I passed the physical exam but the doctor won’t sign the paper until I talk to a counselor. If I was diagnosed in 2004, which is two years ago, can they
rescind the job offer? I have been stabalized on medication so I do not know why it is an issue. It is a huge corporation but it is private. The nurse will not be in for the phone “evaluation” tomorrow but will call me on Monday. Should I be worried? This phone call created more anxiety!
Thank you for your help!

A: I sincerely don’t think they can rescind the job offer based on a mental health illness that you are being treated for. If this were the case, most of the population would be unemployed!
Your personal medical files are private, because of the HIPA laws. You actually don’t have to give them any information.

Q: Anybody With Anxiety Depression Ever Wake Expecting It To Be Gone Yet Get Depressed When They Find It Has Not?
You ever feel really good .and you have anxiety and depression..feeling really good on a particular day and go to sleep that night expecting to wake not depressed and anxious the next day because you know that you are better only to have depression kick in the first thing and make you so sad to realize it hasnt gone and you are back at square on only worse?Lately I have been dealing with both and doing a great job staying busy and doing things that needed to be done and i wanted to do ,but for the last few days I keep waking to find its not going anywhere soon. Its a bizarre feeling to know you have something you don’t know if anything is ever going to help and cant escape from and go to sleep at peace and find it only to reappear the next day.Is there no escaping this?I am suppose to be better yet the mornings bring doubt and depression from false hope.I am seeing a therapist and taking meds and doing all the right things. Will there ever be an escape?

A: I know exactly how you feel. I’ve been this way since my early teens and I’ll be 58 this year. Until they find the cause of this hellish disease there’s only drugs and therapy. I am a fighter but sometimes it gets me good. No one can know the pain and suffering. Please, please keep fighting. God bless and keep you.

Q: How does anxiety/depression effect eating/digestion?
I’ve been having anxiety issues since August, but lately it seems to be taking it’s toll on my stomach and digestive process.. I’ll get this rumbling in my stomach, not the like hungry kind of rumbling, but this weird thing that leads to gas and feeling like I have to use the bathroom. I didn’t go through any weight changes, but my stomach definitely seems a lot more sensitive to what I eat.

I’m not sure if it’s just a thing triggered from anxiety with the nervous system, or if it could be an entirely different digestive or bowel problem that I should get checked out. All I know is that I CAN’T STAND IT. Please help!
Haha, here I was thinking that the bowel problems were an entirely different thing, which only gave me MORE anxiety. Lmaooo. Thanks so much!

A: I went through a rough time and had the same problem. If you’re having major anxiety issues, see your doctor so you can get anti-anxiety medication. Your body needs food even if you’re not hungry because of other emotional problems, so don’t jeopardize your health.

Q: Is there such a law that says that a person diagnosed with a mental disorder (anxiety, depression, ect,can not?
Is there such a law that says that a person diagnosed with a mental disorder (anxiety, depression, etc.) can not lose their home to foreclosure if he/she is seeking professional help?

A: The mortgage company does not care if there is a mental disorder. They just want their money. They can foreclose on anyone who is behind on payments, including those with any type of medical disability.

Read and learn more about anxiety depression panic. For more, visit the Depression website DepressionLearning.com

Q: How do SSRI’s and benzodiazepines work in treating depression/anxiety/panic?
Also, which are more effective. I wanted to know their mechanisms, how both work, how they are similar and how they are different, and if they’re both effective in treating depression/anxiety/panic, or neither, or what.
From what I’ve heard vaguely, SSRI’s actually treat it all while the benzodiazepines just..act as a short term fast relief and calm you down, but don’t actually do much else for you, mechanism wise.

A: Ignore None, he seems to have no idea what he’s talking about. Major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders are caused by problems with brain chemistry. Life events can contribute to anxiety disorders, but they aren’t the main cause. Compare anxiety disorders with diabetes. Diabetes is not caused by a bad diet or lifestyle, but can be aggravated by it.

SSRIs work by indirectly increasing the levels of serotonin in your brain. Serotonin is one of the many chemicals in your brain that affects mood (the other big ones are norepinephrine and dopamine). SSRIs don’t make more serotonin, but they block the reuptake of seratonin, allowing you to soke in what you already have longer. They usually work well, particuarly for anxiety, and are well tolerated for the most part (most people only have to deal with nausea, diarrhea, weight gain, and sexual disfunction). However, they don’t work for everyone, and some people have very bad reactions to them. If you’re looking into SSRIs, Lexapro seems to work the best for anxiety and has the least side effects.

Benzos are older and work a little bit differently. They enhance a neurotransmitter called GABA, which helps calm you down. They work quickly. If you take some Lexapro, it won’t help you with a panic attack you’re having right now, but if you take Ativan, it will calm you down immediatly. You can take them with your SSRIs, or instead of, if SSRIs don’t work for you or if you can’t tolerate them. They’re a good choice if you only get anxious occasionly; SSRIs or even antipsychotics are better for constant, chronic anxiety. If you struggle with depression, you shouldn’t use benzos long term, because they can aggravate depression. They’re also quite addictive.

Research both meds and talk to your psychiatrist about them. You can take one, both, or neither, depending on what your needs are. Also, I recommend you see a psychotherapist to help work through your anxiety. Allow me to go back to the diabetes metaphor. If you take insulin for diabetes, but sit around on the couch eating chocolate all day, you’re probably not going to get much better. Same goes for anxiety. Meds will help, but only if you work through your issues and make some lifestyle changes as well.

I hope everything works out okay. You’ll be in my prayers.

Q: What are other alternative ways to deal with depression/anxiety/panic?
I know that St. John’s wort can work on some for depression, as can music, being around happy people, being outdoors on a nice day and/or reading some self-help books.

I also know that lavender aromatherapy; Valerian Root; Chamomile Tea; therapy; yoga; meditation; prayer; exercise, etc. can help anxiety and panic.

What are some other things that one can do to help themselves? Other than therapy, prescription meds, and all of the above

A: Eating the right stuff can do wonders for the body, mind and soul.
I also find keeping two journals helpful. Everyone has bad days or hard times in life. The journaling that I recommend has two books, one for good days and one for not good days. My good day books are brightly colored and I put nice pictures on the front. My not good day books are plain. I keep the good day books and read them, the not good day books I burn. The idea is that you want to remind yourself of the good things so you keep them with you but the not good things should be released so they don’t keep you down. If you use the idea, you should read the good day book (or part of it) everyday but the not good day book is not read. Once you write down the fear, irritation, hurt or whatever it belongs to the book, not you. I believe this helps in learning to let the negative go and build on the positive.
Once you use it for a while you find yourself using the plain not good day book less and less because you will find more positive things in your daily experience to write about. Say you overslept and were late for work, rather than being upset that you were late you will recognize that you got good sleep. This is a simple example but it works the same. The reason you will use the good day books more is because you will lose everything in the not good day books, you don’t want to burn your life so you will find positive things to write about and therefore think more positivley and eventually live and feel more positive. It’s a process but one I’ve found rather useful.

Q: How to overcome anxiety, depression and panic attacks?
How to overcome anxiety, depression and panic attacks? I am so hopeless. Ive been suffering with depression and social anxiety with intense panic attacks for three years. I think I had anxiety for longer than that but I wasnt depressed or had panic attacks. My last three years 18-21 I spend staying home, best years of my life something needs to be done.I dont have any friends anymore. I feel like crap. I had major panic attack today even going to Grocery store.I can’t even stand at the red light I think everybody is looking at me.When stranger talks to me I just freeze like paralyzed, start shaking, trembling,my mind and heart racing, sweating,my mind goes blank and I just want to scream on the top of my lungs. I started avoiding social situations at all cost. I even feel panicky talking to my family or relatives. All day long bad thoughts running through my head. How can I beat this plz,any one ,because this is not a life this is hell, any info really appreciated.

Q: Has Prozac worked for your anxiety/depression or panic attacks? Can it lead to a worse mental illness?
I suffer from anxiety and depression and am always on the verge of having a panic attack. I’m wondering if Prozac would be worth taking and if you can stop taking it in the end without needing it anymore. I’m afraid that in the long run it can cause other mental illnesses like schizophrenia. However, I’m still trying to find a medical cause for my anxiety and depression like thyroid, adrenal, or inner ear problems.

A: Prozac has some very very dangerous side effects, I would only use that as a very last resort. If you go to http://pi.lilly.com/us/prozac.pdf?reqNavId=undefined and look at what the makers of the drug have to list about it’s effects. I think you’d consider other options real quick. So, with that being said. I want to focus on the cause of your anxiety and depression. Essential Fatty Acid(EFAs) deficiency has been linked with causing depression. People who do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids or do not maintain a healthy balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids in their diet may be at an increased risk for depression. The omega-3 fatty acids are important components of nerve cell membranes. They help nerve cells communicate with each other, which is an essential step in maintaining good mental health. In particular, DHA is involved in a variety of nerve cell processes.

Levels of omega-3 fatty acids were found to be measurably low and the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids were particularly high in a clinical study of patients hospitalized for depression. In a clinical study of individuals with depression, those who ate a healthy diet consisting of fatty fish 2 – 3 times per week for 5 years experienced a significant reduction in feelings of depression and hostility.

When researchers monitor eating habits across countries, they find that as fish consumption goes up, depression rates go down. In fact, there is a sixty-fold difference in depression rates across countries from the highest (Japan and Taiwan) to the lowest (North America, Europe and New Zealand) omega-3 fat consumption. Even postpartum depression decreases as women increase their consumption of fish. Many people also report a drop in mood when they switch too quickly to a low-fat diet.

Anxiety and depression is a complex issue, too detailed for a brief answer on here…but any disease or health condition is associated with a vitamin, mineral, or other nutrient deficiency. Address that issue first, do some research, and see what happens. Best of luck…

Q: This question is for people who overcame social anxiety, depression and panic attacks?
This question is for people who overcame social anxiety, depression and panic attacks? How did you do it?What have worked for you? I tried exercise, mediation, breathing techniques and nothing works. Is medication the only answer for me? What have worked you?

A: I started out my teen years with horrible social anxiety. It was so bad I couldn’t leave my house. Today I am in the US Marine Special Operations, I have traveled the world been on mission in Afghanistan, Iraq and a few other places.

I made a complete turn around, and ill tell you how. One of the few things I left the house for was to go to my mixed martial arts class were I would train in full contact fighting. One day my instructor told me I needed to get faster. But I was lost in how to go about it. I mean you can learn techniques do wait lifting to get stronger. But how do you get faster. I was told to pretend you are fast with each and every technique you do. Over time I got faster.

But I started to use that same technique for social anxiety. First off you need to act. Look at the people around you. Look at how calm they are in situations you would freak out in. Ant act like that. Imagine you are in a social environment, or picture yourself giving a speech, and imagine being calm, the calmest you have ever been.

But believe it is actually happening. When its actually happening take control of your thoughts and act. Like a shy actor taking the role of an out going character. The best time to imagine this is as often as possible, right before you go to bed and especially when your listing to music.

The other thing is DO NOT think. Your hole life you have been told think before you do. Well when it comes to this, don’t. Just do it. Like a robot, do it and don’t think about it.

There is an old saying that goes, be careful of your thoughts, they may become your actions, be carful of your actions they become your character, be carful of your character it might become you.

Imagine yourself scared you will be scared, Imagine yourself confident with no anxiety and you will be confident with no anxiety.

The last thing is to visualize. When you breath in imagine the air going into your lungs and being sucked into your blood when it goes threw your body its pushing out pain, negative thoughts and weakness. Imagine it getting replaced by good thoughts, power, and a can do anything sense of thought.

Or I guess you can try medication lol.

Good luck I hope this helps
p.s. it takes time, but be patient with it

Q: Where to start for anxiety, depression panic help?
I don’t have health insurance so my options are limited. Where does one go for prescriptions for treatment? Do you simply go to your regular MD at a walk in clinic and tell him or her you suffer from depression and anxiety? Will they write the script, or will they make you go to a shrink? Who provides the meds? It has become quite apparent to me, that with these meds it is a crap shot at best as to what works for each client. Most people seem to have to try two or three combos, or meds before they get it right, so why does it really matter? I know for 100% fact I have depression and the anxiety is obvious. So how easy is it to get started with some help? I have not the patience, or resources to go to $300 weekly shrink visits.

A: I’ve had this problem for years. Taking charge of your own health in addition to your doctor is a must. Recognising that you are depressed is a good start. My family doctor has worked with me to get the medication right. I’ve switched med’s through out the years, I think because our bodies and circumstances change, too. So, expect to have to work with the medicine. Having said that, you do need to see a doctor. It would be a good idea to have a friend recommend one so that you can see the same doctor again or at least be in the same practice on the next visit for the records. We have a “First Health” clinic that has payment plans and reduced rates for people like us w/o insurance and low income. It’s actually very nice. I also get my medicine at canadadrugs.com at half the price I would have to pay at the local drugstore. You’ll have to fax, e-mail your script and then mail it in. It does take about 2-3 weeks to get them, so ask you doctor for enough samples to get you by until they arrive. I would give the first medicine a good month to see how it works, so samples at first are a good idea because you have to order a minimum through canada and you’ll want to make sure those are the ones that are going to work for you. Tell your doctor that you would like a drug that tackles depression and anxiety, both. Also, when you do decide to try a drug, long term, and you want to get it online, make sure they write the script at least 100, to cover the minimum order requirements. Good luck!

Q: Does anxiety/panic attacks/depression that are triggered by recreational drug use go away?
If someone starts having panic attacks and depression after recreational drug use, will the problems go away eventually? Even if this person has stopped the drug use and the anxiety and panic and depression is still there 9 months later?

A: Maybe your anxiety and depression have absolutely nothing to do with the drug use. If it’s been 9 months since you’ve used, there might be a more severe underlying problem. That actually may be the reason you used in the first place. Many times, people that suffer from emotional problems use drugs to self medicate or escape their feelings. You should go see a psychiatrist, therapist, or counselor to discuss these issues to get to the root of your anxiety and depression.
Best of luck

Q: Psychology anxiety, depression will make heart attack (but i have panic anxiety and depression)?
Psychology anxiety, depression will make heart attack (but i have panic anxiety and depression), could not perform in sex, Pre-mature ejaculation, weak feeliongs, could not concentrate in work etc? pls help me what are the body affects like nervous, brain organs etc will be affected by anxiety and psychological problem, i could not make good work in my life in official places etc? pls help me out for marriage also..

A: These are somatoform disorders and can be tackled by cognitive behaviour therapy, even without medicines. But before embarking on any psychological therapy, physical ailment has to be ruled out by evaluation by a physician.

Q: How do you cope with Chronic Depression, anxiety disorders, or panic attacks?
I am looking to converse with others on how they have successfully dealt with or are attempting to successfully deal with Chronic Depression, Anxiety, and Panic Disorders,

A: I feel your pain. I had suffered for many years with anxiety and panic attacks. It was horrible. Socializing was out of the question for me, I would drop where ever I was and woke up seeing strangers around me, thats how severe my panic attacks were..I went through all the phases. You name it , I had it..But thanks to god that with self discipline and prayer Im free from those illnesses. Confront your fears, there are fears that are causing you to react this way without you knowing it..start gradually, but do it, I promise you will make it through… take valerian root , it helps the process go smoother, your self-esteem is low and it causes this nurve outbursts, so say to yourself, who am I, what do I want, and what am i going to do about it…once you discipline yourself in this areas you will feel more mind empowered and will be able to walk in a straight line..if you feel an anxiety attack coming on, breath in a paper bag and don’t think on what braught you to that point. Say this and believe it, ” Im ok nothing is wrong, its just my nerves trying to control my life” repeat it and apply it. Until it becomes real to you… you will set yourself free if you make effort on your own behalf. Medications are ok, but I went through them, and there only temporary aids… your efforts are permanent. Once you discipline yourself your on your way to freedom…if your spiritual, pray ….whats impossible for mankind is possible for GOD through jesus christ….. Good luck…

Q: Anyone out these currently pregnant or was pregnant and battling with Anxiety/Panic Attacks/Depression?
I’m 10 weeks pregnant and suffer with Anxiety/Panic and Depression, and feel so alone with my symptoms…

Anyone out there can relate and have any good stories?

A: You are not alone. It’s very common to feel this way during pregnancy. Postpartum depression gets all the attention, but for many women, depression actually starts before delivery.

I had terrible anxiety and depression for the first five months of my pregnancy. I began to feel like an emotional wreck a week before I found out I was pregnant. I was crazy and making my husband crazy with me. I cried several times a day, even would wake up in the middle of the night and cry and worried about EVERYTHING!

I read a lot about the effects of antidepressants on a fetus and kept trying to hang in there without medication for the sake of the baby. I remember the day it all became too much to bear, I had thoughts of suicide, giving the baby up for adoption and aborting her.

I called the Dr.’s office and got in that day for counseling. My Dr. put me on 10mg of Celexa, the lowest dose and one of the antidepressants considered safer during pregnancy. It took a couple weeks, but I started feeling like myself again. I am a couple weeks away from delivery now, and my mood has been fantastic since starting the medication.

I have also read a few great books that have helped me cope with anxiety that I’d like to pass along to you: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, The Seven Laws of Spiritual Success by Deepak Chopra, and You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay.

Know that there is help out there for you, whether it be medication, counseling or self-help books. Please talk with your doctor. If he/she doesn’t understand, find one that does.

Q: what would be the best job (listing) for Anxiety, Panic, depression suffers?
Social anxiety, depression, etc…

A: soemthing part time and low stress. with a not a lot of people that you have to deal with. the best job that i had and believe it or not it paid really well, was doing dishes at the hospital. there was no stress and i worked pretty much by myself. just a thought. hope that this helps

Q: How to treat Depression, anxiety, panic naturally?
my wife has mood swings, she feels pain in legs, fatigue, sudden rapid heart beat, crying spells and vomiting or stomach jitters.
She eats less very imbalanced food, no vitamins or minerals etc.
is there imbalance of Serotonin, Norepinephrine, Dopamine ? she often gets poor coordination while walking.
5htp, l tyrosine or more GABA ? how to treat her naturally with supplements?

A: Your wife needs to be seen right away by her doctor. Her depression could very well be caused by low levels of Serotonin or menopause, if she hasn’t gone through it already. The doctor will make his diagnosis, then your wife can go from there. She may be put on an antidepressant, especially if the doctor thinks her Serotonin levels are really low.I suggest you accompany your wife to the doctor & be with her when the doctor examines her. Ask him/her about the antidepressant, Lexapro. Many people I know, have been put on it & are doing so well on it. They’re feeling better, eating better, & are getting out for a long walk daily, which helps considerably. I wish your wife the best.

Q: Is there a link relating mineral and vitamin deficiencies to anxiety depression and panic attacks?
If so, what kind of minerals or vitamins can I take to help this problem?

A: I’m not recommending anything, although you just might want to do some research into B vitamins. I had really bad problems with nerves and not enough B vitamins were the issue for me. Stress drains your B’s. Overall, excellent nutritional health in every area will ensure that you are as calm and happy as possible. If that doesn’t do it, then you can look for other reasons. Sorry no link but there is a wealth of info on the net telling you which mineral or vitamin helps with which thing. Good luck!

Q: How to cope with Depression, Anxiety and Panic Attacks?
I have been on Lexapro fro Depression and am still having alot of axniety and panic attacks. My husband does not understand me and I am afraid he might leave me and take out kids. I have no one to talk to about this and am confused. I want it to stop before it ruins my like. Can anyone give me some advise or maybe I need to change my medicine. Thank You

A: Recover from depression one step at a time
Recovering from a depressive episode or managing depression long-term takes energy and planning. You may think, how am I going to find energy or motivation when I feel so poorly?
Depression can strip you of your self-esteem, self-confidence and motivation. Approach this in the same way you would approach a friend, loved one or child. You would approach helping that person in a reasonable, caring manner. Do the same for yourself. The key is to begin with small steps.
Say you want to begin exercising, attending to bills or mail, increasing your socialization or housework. Would you tackle all of these simultaneously? Of course you wouldn’t. Pick one that is a priority to you. You then will need to set up a reasonable plan as to how to proceed with accomplishing your goal.
Let’s go with exercise first. Overall, your goal may to improve your health. Your goal may be to walk a mile but how would you do this? You would train by walking one step at a time. The idea is to be your own cheerleader, be kind to yourself. You deserve to feel good and to be happy. Set up reasonable goals and then honestly rate them using the 1-10 scale. It is OK if you need to change your goal. Find a support person to share your goal with. Studies show that this will make it more likely that you will follow through. Once you have accomplished your first goal, you will find your self-esteem and confidence are boosted. Don’t stop now, set up your next goal. Set your self up for success! You can do it!

Q: How to overcome social anxiety?? depression?? Panic attacks?? Inability to relax?
I used to smoke marijuana and it helped at first but like anything type of drug it only helps for a while. I am trying to get over this without drugs or even medication, i had bad anxiety throughout high school and about two years after i graduated i was really at my peak of happiness, nothing bothered me i wasn’t anxious at all my life seemed perfect. But once i go through the cycle of life and something traumatic happens like it did i don’t want to end up here again.

A: Smoke marijuana

Or drink b-relaxed Vitamin Water

Q: Are there any natural things that help panic, anxiety, and depression?
I don’t want to have to go back on Paxil, but my panic attacks are starting to get bad. I haven’t started hyperventilating, yet, but that’s just a matter of time.

A: when you feel panicky, concentrate on your breathing and take long deep breaths. Try to relax as often as possible, and if something begins to stress you out, take a break and relax.

Go for a run or a walk..it helps to clear your mind

Good luck!

Good luck…

Q: I’m a 39 year old virgin with social anxiety, panic and depression. How can I ever get a girlfriend?
I have been to shrinks, therapists and have tried EMDR, drugs of all kinds, talk therapy, and nothing seems to work. I have been on 4 dates my entire life, and they all have occured in 2007. I have never kissed a girl or anything. I am so depressed about it, and I just don’t know where to turn to. I’m tired of crying myself to sleep most nights. I have allot of love to give, but most people don’t even know I exist. This lonliness is killing me, and I am afriad that I will die without knowing love or making love. I have thought about a hooker, but that isn’t what I really want either. I honestly do want to experience sex, I have since I was in grade school, but most women look at me like I am a virus. I can’t go on living this way, and I don’t know where to go for help. It seems that I have exhausted all my options.

A: First off, get that hooker idea out of your head, or you’ll end up with a disease. You don’t want that. You have to put yourself out there for people to notice you. They won’t notice you if you’re sitting in the back and quiet. They won’t notice you, if you don’t try and come out of that shell. You can’t sit back and let it happen. Keep trying, and ask girls out. The ones you’re truly interested in. I met my husband a few years ago, and he was 36 and inexperienced. He lived a sheltered life, and wasn’t exposed to a lot of the outside world. He was taking care of his mom for so long, that the years just went by. I met him on Match.com. He’s WONDERFUL, and we’ve been married for four years come this November. We have a son who will be three. He’s a great father and a great husband! I couldn’t have asked for a better person. Because of his inexperience, and sheltered life, he was unexposed to a lot of the evil out there from other people. He is kindhearted and so loving. And faithful. You too will get your chance. You have to keep trying and try to break that shyness because if you don’t, then life will pass you by. Confidence is a key ingrediant for a woman to recognize and be attracted to. They want a man who knows what he wants out of life. Doesn’t mean career wise, but knows who he is, and will stand his ground with his beliefs etc. They want to feel safe with their man. Confidence in a person provides this and it shows through. If a woman says no, then just say ‘thank you anyway’ and keep your eyes and heart open for someone else. It’s ok to get rejected. Everyone does in their lifetime. Just bounce back and go for it again. Appearance is also a key. I’m not talking about just looks here, but how you dress, how you take care of your hygeine etc. These are all key ingrediants for a woman to notice a man.
Take care and best wishes to you. Hang in there.

Good luck!

Q: What’s the difference between extreme social anxiety & depression, and BPD?
I’m 16 and I’ve been diagnosed with (and given prozac for) social & general anxiety, panic attacks and depression.

I’m also:
-terrified of being left alone, losing the love of my friends/family, desperate to please everyone
-blowing hot and cold about people, thinking I love them one minute and absolutely hating them the next, often without them doing anything different
-most of the time I hate myself and have low self esteem, but sometimes I think I’m the greatest person ever lol
-I self harm a lot, self mutilate, and have attempted suicide twice (kept it a secret though)
-in the last few months I’ve begun to do impulsive things like getting off with random people, smoking all my weed at once and throwing up, spending all the money I’ve saved & stuff like that when I used to be a very thoughtful, cautious kid
-I had hourly mood swings before the prozac and felt very anxious and empty. I also used to become paranoid sometimes.
-I sometimes get furiously angry but I direct it all towards myself and cut.
-I’m a normal weight but I have problems with food. I’ll starve for a couple of days, then binge for another two, then maybe purge, then starve… etc etc.
-I’m very shy, but I use alcohol & drugs to make myself seem outgoing. Although I’m shy, I’m a lively, outrageous, fun person when I’m feeling relaxed with close friends (or drunk lol)

It seems to me like I have borderline personality disorder, not just extreme anxiety & depression. Why didn’t my psychologist diagnose me with BPD? What is the criteria for diagnosing that?

A: First of all, you shouldn’t be trying to diagnose yourself. BPD is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more severe.

To me, you sound like you have bipolar disorder. I’m not a psychologist, so I can’t say for sure. Have you told your psychologist everything? Make an appointment and tell them EVERYTHING you’ve listed. Remember, it’s confidential and they won’t judge you, and if you don’t tell them everything, you won’t get the proper treatment.

In any case, like I said, quit trying to diagnose yourself. You’re just creating yourself needless anxiety.

Q: Any herbs or homeopathic supplements for social anxiety/depression similar to Paxil or other anti-depressants?
I am taking St. John’s Wort but I’m wondering if there are others that might work better on social anxiety and depression. Thank you

A: Hi there “Girl Face”

Errmm .. I beg your pardon but are you a male or a female as this would enable me to suggest something more pertinent for both social anxiety and depression.

Being an accomplished homeopath [even if I say so myself ] I would naturally suggest homeopathic remedies.

Homeopathic remedies for anxiety/social anxiety/panic attacks/depression.

Anxiety, sudden with restlessness and fear of death, Panic Attacks, Aconite 30x or 200x, ½ hourly (3 doses).

Anxiety, makes patient walk fast; due to anticipation Argentum Nit 200x, 3 hourly (3 doses).

Anxiety, aggravated by upward or downward motion; going in an elevator; worse till 11 P.M, Borax 200x or 1M, 3 hourly (3 doses).

Full of apprehensions in the evening Causticum 200x, 3 hourly (3 doses).

Anxiety and fears in the evening with restlessness and palpitation Calcarea Carb. 200x or 1M, 3 hourly (3 doses).

Anxiety, better after eating Anacardium Or 30x, 4 hourly.

Depression & grief (bereavement):

Severe shock due to sudden death of loved ones; restlessness, anxiety and fear Aconite 200x, 10 min (3 doses).

For chronic grief and indignation Staphysagria, 200x or 1M, weekly (3 doses).

Depression with suicidal thoughts feeling of worthlessness, Aurum Met 30x, three times a day half hour before meals.

*** Homeopathic remedy dosage ***

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. Take 3-4 drops of remedy in ¼ th glass of water, preferably empty stomached.

I suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

Q: I think may have social anxiety/depression issues, where do I go?
I won’t go into details as to why but i suspect i may suffer from social anxiety and/or some sort of self-esteem/depression disorders. Where do I go to have this checked out? GP? Some sort of private shrink? can i get help on the NHS (uk).

thanks

A: A licensed counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist can diagnose your social anxiety & depression. The most effective help for social anxiety is therapy w/ either a counselor or psychologist. Medications do help with the physical symptoms of anxiety but therapy is most effective in my opinion & through my own experience. I am unfamiliar with the mental health system in the UK but if you can find a counselor or psychologist with experience treating social anxiety & depression, that would be your best bet. And if you need medication to help, then you can go to either a psychiatrist or a general practitioner for anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications.

Q: Do I have social anxiety or depression, and can a sixteen-year-old get either?
I have symptoms of both, which include an “empty” feeling all the time, loss of interest in activities, irritability, feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating/making decisions, AND anxiety of social situations, fear of answering the phone or door, and avoidance of social gatherings.
Can you have both at the same time? And does your age matter? And furthermore, can you get depression for no apparent reason?
Sorry that was so long, but if you’ve read through all of this, could you please give me any advice? Anything would really be appreciated.

A: If the feelings of emptiness, loneliness, sadness, unhappiness, fatigue, loss of interest and such have lasted for at least 6 months, then yes, you could have depression. You could have anxiety disorder as well. Unfortunately these two conditions can affect young children ages 2 to old people age 99. See a Dr. for help.

Q: What should I do if I have social anxiety and depression and I dont have health insurance?
What should I do if I have social anxiety and depression and I dont have health insurance? Where can I get free treatment or meds?I live in California.

A: I agree with the last answer you received, pot or alcohol is not the answer. Look in the directory for free help. People donate money for these kinds of cases all over the US. They donate to help people that cannot afford the high cost of doctors, and medication. You’ll have to research a little, but in the long run it will pay off….
Good luck, and don’t listen to the others.

Q: Who have social anxiety and depression ?
Who have social anxiety and depression ?
you have social anxiety and depression ? are you taking meds is it working and for how long u been taking them ? whats the name of the meds u taking ?

A: Tequila generally helps my social anxiety….

Not so much with the depression.

I am currently on Lexapro and Xanax. The lexapro is an everyday drug for depression and anxiety (mostly anxiety) that is hard to get used to, but once you’re on it it works very well. My xanax is for when my anxiety hits. Xanax puts me in a happy bubble that isn’t over until I wake up. I’ve been on both of these for 6 months

Q: I’m 19 years old and have been dealing with social anxiety and depression?
I’m 19 years old and have been dealing with social anxiety and depression for as long as i can remember. I had a few close friend but got into a huge fight with them a couple of years ago since then i have no life. My social anxiety and depression has caused me to drop out if school when i was in the 10th grade, I never had a job because of my fear of what people are thinking of me and also embarissing myself in front of other people. All i do everyday is wake up watch tv all day and sleep. I feel like im the only one going through this. I want to get my life back on track any one have any advise?

A: You could start out by getting a GED, or go to Job Corps. You could use the diploma to get a job that doesn’t have much interaction (office job?).

If I could suggest going for a walk for thirty minutes a day to burn energy that you might otherwise use worrying about something (I know this sounds out there, but this works for me, and this is really the only explanation I come up with to tie it together, lol.)

Definently talk to a doctor about anti-anxiety medication.

Q: How does depression/social anxiety medication work?
I’m 16 with a pretty bad case of social anxiety. My mom has agreed to use medication, though she is alittle hesitant because of repots that this type of medication gives suicidal thoughts to people under 18.

I’ve been to therapy and though it gave me some good pointers that I use everyday to help me through the social part of my social anxiety, it doesn’t get rid of that “worried” filling that I can sometimes feel continuously. That feeling actually consumes my whole mood at times. The therapy has only helped with talking to people, and even then it has only helped alittle.

But I would like to know more about this type of medication before I actually take it. I’m sure my doctor will tell me some stuff too, but how does it actually work? How will it make me feel better?

A: Hello ‘Dreamer’,

The fact that you have social anxiety disorder is comforting. Your diorder is considered part of a neurotic condition (disordered mood) as opposed to a psychotic condition (disordered thinking/thoughts). The former is easier to treat some believe, and is a less severe diagnosis partly because your symptoms of acute and chronic anxiety in public or social situations is a less severe defecit in functioning than bi-polar disorder (manic depression) or schizophrenia (thought disorder).

Don’t mind the language, so far your symptoms are less severe and obvious to the ‘man on the street’ than other more serious mental disorders. Before we talk about any specific drugs used to treat your disorder, let’s understand two things:

1. Some drugs prescribed by psychiatrists or other medical expert benefit more than one type of mental helath condition. So some drugs used to treat bi-olar disorder also work with schizophrenia, some drugs used to treat depression also have an anti-anxiety effect.
2. Anti-anxiety medications are generally necessary when cognitive/psycho-therapy alone is not successful in enabling the socially anxious person to feel ‘normal’ i.e. much less anxious in social situations (around people or requiring successful performance on some task, like a test, dealing with school, talking up in class, relationships etc).

Some times persons with social anxiety are not completely diagnosed, meaning they are demonstating panic, phobia or signs of a genralized anxiety condition which is persistent worrying or anxiety regarless of whether the socially anxious person is facing a challenge of not. In other words the socially anxious person may have several symptoms which need to go into remission.

Drugs along with therapy further enable symptoms to go into remission or disappear altogether, at least where neurotic disorders are concerned and often cases of psychosis as well. Where social anxiety is concerned the etiology/cause/mechanism of the disorder suggests:

1. A genetic predispostion which strongly suggests aberrant/untypical gene activity at some point of the developmental process or after birth.
2. This in turn creates the biological conditions (defective genes), along with your environment/family life or other circumstances to foster the presentation of mental illness in your case, social anxiety disorder.

What these drugs do is to powerfully alter the unusal symptoms and so tranquilize the nervous system, alter diseased neural pathways, chemical activity in the brain spinal cord and peripheral nervous system activity. In social anxiety you may have an overactive pituitary gland and hypothalamus which along with the endocrine system creates the feelings of fright or flight by producing an overactivity of the endocrine hormone called adrenalin, (the fear hormone). A persistent sense of worry is also linked to thought processes at the subconscious and conscious levels in the brain. Again the drug(s) your doctor will prescribe will function to quiet down your nervous system, make you feel more relaxed and generally happier in terms of your mood generally. You however need to alwasy take your drugs and at the appropriate time in order to reap the maximum benefit from them (and despite any unpleasant side effects tha tmay occur). In most cases they are not a permanent cure and some symptoms can return once you stop drug therapy. More specifically the drugs either increase or prevent the the over-production or under-production of certain chemicals in your brain which migrate between neural cells and neural complexes carrying messages. The cells in the brain are called neurons. Two major neurochemicals tageted in your brain for stabilization of their function are dopamine and seratonin. (please read up on these neuro-brain chemicals) because they do influence your mood and so have to be stabilized.

Hope this helps and was not too medical. Please read a psychology book and look at the section/chapter on abnormal behaviour/psychology. It should help you with easy reading on your condition. I don’t have the time to talk to you about depression i.e. clinical depression. The drug(s) prescribed for you will effectively treat your depression as well as the anxiety. Everybody gets anxious at some time or another so you can improve and possibly eventually
come off your meds. 40% of persons or more also have a down time or depressive episode at some point in their lives . So clinical depression also can disappear. Again talk with your doctor if you feel comfortable to do so. Part of your healing will depend on educating yourself as best you can.

Best of luck and God bless,

Q: how to deal with social anxiety and depression?
In June I was diagnosed with social anxiety and major depression. I’m able to work but I have no friends. It’s hard for me to get my thoughts out well. It really bothers me because I do want to make some friends, especially those with the same interests as me. I’ve been like this as long as I can remember. How do I overcome this?
Thanks for the advice so far. I forgot to mention in, I’m currently on Zoloft, started out on 50 mg a day now up to 75 mg since August. I’ve been seeing a therapist since July which has helped somewhat.

A: Fist of all, good for you! You are working hard to change and that’s awesome!! I know how hard it is and have been through it myself. One thing that helped me, which I’m sure your therapist has recommended, is journaling. Write out your feelings and thoughts and just get it all out on paper. It doesn’t have to make sence or look nice or hold anyone’s attention, and to those of us who feel like we do, that’s important! I feel like i have a hard time making friends too, and the only reason i can figure is that i have trust issues. That may be something you are dealing with as well. Its sad to say, but i have to put forth effort to be friendly and tell myself before i go somewhere that i am going to make eye contact and say hello to people i see. Practice at the grocery store…its not that bad, i promise!

Q: What can I do for my social anxiety/depression besides medication and therapy?
I’ve been in therapy and on medication for about a year now, and I don’t think that it’s been doing enough. It’s so hard for me to make close friends and I don’t have a good relationship with my parents, so there isn’t anyone that I can talk to. Please help if you can….

A: Hi,

The 3 best things to do first are to:
- make sure you are getting at least 7 hours sleep a night (and not less or too much more than that – don’t sleep all day)
- exercise a few times a week where you actually sweat, this release nature pain killers and feel good chemicals and can reduce stress
- eat good foods or at least cut out the bad foods. You brain and body gets all the vitamins and minerals that are digested in your stomach and if you don’t give it good foods then you don’t have the fuel to think clearly and you will have less energy to move around…etc.

If you are successfully doing these 3 things and are still having issues, which many us are, then write down how bad you feel and for how long it has lasted… if you feel you can not cope with depression or anxiety or lack of motivation…etc. and it is seriously negatively affecting your life for long periods of time, then yes go talk to your doctor to refer you to a councillor or psychiatrist and one of the best things you can do is look for a local support group for depression or anxiety or lack of motivation…etc. as these have helped me very much. If you go to Craigslist website for your city, you should be able to search for a group. Or call your cities specific crisis hotline and they should be able to give you some group names and other resources you can utilize to help your condition.
My opion of psychiatrists is that although they can usually tell you what you are suffering from or give it a name, they are not so good at treating it naturally or with groups, most of them give you drugs unfortunatley. Drugs are good if you are so deep in depression that you almost can’t work or go to school and you are having longer periods of depression …etc. They can get you out of the hole, but research very carefully what you take as most of them have side effects and some are very hard to get off of once you get onto them.
Before taking any drugs, talk to a support group or join an online support group such as one of the several on yahoo groups or google groups and see what they are talking about and post a question to them as they would have years of experience about that. Then compare what they said to other resources that you may have access to and them make a decision to use drugs or not. For me, just going to my weekly meetings keeps me feeling ok for now and met some good friends I can talk to. There are several other natural ways to fend off mental issues if you study and reseach it. Could be you are not eating properly or have bad digestion or have a thyroid issue …etc.
I would suggest to get a regular phsyical exam done by doctors to see if anything comes from it. Especially test your thryoid and adrenal glands as my sister had a thryoid issue that affect her energy and moods and I had a DHEA and Cortisol level issue (both produced by adrenal glands) where I ended up taking some DHEA suppliments and eating more foods for it, and felt much better.

Hope this helps and take good care of yourself. This will get better if you just put in a littel time and effort and have faith that you can and will get better.

Q: who have social anxiety and depression ?
you have social anxiety and depression ? are you taking meds is it working and for how long u been taking them ? whats the name of the meds u taking ?

A: I’m against meds.
These days there’s a pill for every little problem someone has.
I think the reason you have social anxiety is because you’re afraid what people think of you, therefore you’re not comfortable with yourself. Well, there’s your problem. Until you accept yourself, and like yourself, you’re going to have social anxiety.

Q: Should i tell people at uni, that i have social anxiety & depression?
im going uni this september, and i think i will have to do the introducing game, on the first day, and i dont know if i should say i have social anxiety & depression. it might scared them away, but i want people to like me for who i am!?

A: Be honest, I always respect that. This is a part of who you are and you would probably be surprised of how many are affected by the same things.

Q: Anyone suffering with social anxiety and depression?
I’m 19 years old and have been dealing with social anxiety and depression for as long as i can remember.
A: You need to see a psychiatrist and a therapist. Go to your county social services office an apply for medicaid. Once approved, go to the county mental health office and ask for an evaluation. They can set you up in a day program that will help you to deal with your social anxiety and depression. Also, you will go to group therapy sessions that will help you. It is a good place for you to make friends. When you are ready, they can set you up with a job in a sheltered workshop. It is like practicing for a real job. You have work to do, but you will not be fired if you can’t do it. There is a counselor there who can help you with work related issues.

First step: apply for Medicaid.

A: Well I have the same and what I did was just explain what I have been feeling and then they usually will let you know what you have even though you know and then they will offer you some options like medication which I am on and helps a bunch or they will ask about doing therapy which I also have and helps a bunch or they will ask if you want to do both which I do and the combo works wounders. Good luck.

Q: Were should my Acupuncturist be putting the Needles to cure Depression & Anxiety?
I am currently undergoing Acupuncture for Depression & Anxiety, is there any certain location on the body were the needles should be placed.

A: It depends on the style, Chinese, Japanese, five element school etc. Probably Chinese protocols would include, Bai hui (Governor 20) on the top of the scalp, 5 element might use windows of the sky points around neck and upper torso, or release the 5 internal dragons, points on abdomen and legs, Japanese school uses points determined by abdominal reflexes. Most of the powerful points tend to be on forearms and lower legs, back points would also be included. It also depends on the insight of the practitioner and what issues he sees as require to be addressing. therefore protocols vary between practitioners. hope that was useful.

Q: Can someone tell me how to cure depression and anxiety without medication?
I have been having a long term episode with depression and anxiety for over 20 years and i would like to find a permanent cure. does anyone have any answers please help. thanks very much.

A: Go for PRANAYAM an old form of Yoga very quick in revealing your anxiety and depression.

Q: Does acupuncture cure depression and anxiety?
hi i’m 17 years old almost turning 18 in a few weeks of March, and since my mom is going to be getting my an appointment for acupuncture, she says that one of her friends told her that it cures fear, anxiety, and depression, giving them a calm feeling. Now is that true? jw.

A: Here is an article on acupuncture for the treatment of depression.
You can also search the directory there to find a licensed acupuncturist.
Give it a try. I have heard great things. (Article link in source box)

Q: Is there a cure for anxiety depression?
I have been struggling with anxiety for the past 6 years, this is why I’m looking for an effective cure for anxiety and get off medication. I’m really on the point to give up, and this makes me afraid.

Has anyone managed to find a good cure for anxiety ?

A: anxiety is my every day fight for it. I know exactly how you feel. The desperation is big and the impulse of going away . I really know how is it. well let me tell a few things that works for me, maybe work for you too. First you have to follow some rules:

1-You have to learn to change the way you are thinking. This means BLOCK bad thoughts in the moment that came out to your mind.

2-NEVER see violence programs on tv or news that included violence .

3-drink warm milk before going to bed.
Remember my friend life is not easy but who told you it was? I wish you the best to you and if you need to talk here I am.

Q: Will Midol and other PMS medications help cure depression and anxiety? Is it safe for a man to take PMS meds?
I have a question. I have been suffering from recurent depression and anxiety most of my life. Someone told me that I should take Midol or some other PMS medication to treat depresion.

I am affraid to take that, because I am a guy. What affect would PMS medication have on a guy?

A: Midol and other PMS medications will not do much if you have a chemical imbalance that is causing your anxiety and depression. It may make you feel a little better for a while, but not enough to feel great. Those medications won’t do anything to you because you are male.

I suggest seeing a counselor. A counselor is often cheaper. They cannot prescribe medication, but they usually work for an M.D. or D.O. that can. Medication has made a world of difference for me and I do see a counselor on occasion.

Q: Cure anxiety depression?
Is panicyl is a good medicine for cure anxiety depression?

A: I was on Citalopram (also know as Celexa) it is a combination Anti-Anxiety Anti-Depression … it worked MIRACLES but then I started to have increased anxiety triggered by something else and so I added an additional as-needed anti anxiety and the problem was much better.

I recommend Citalopram/Celexa … I have tried several others and nothing did it for me quite like this one.

Good Luck! Stay Well!

Q: How can I cure my depression/anxiety without medication?
It’s moderate, I have panic attacks multiple times a day but they’re never that severe. I’m perfectly capable of smiling when I’m in public but I just feel hopeless at home.

A: Interact with people. Don’t be manic about it, but don’t spend a lot of time home alone either. Get out there. Take your cues from the people around you. If they aren’t stressed out, there’s no need for you to be either. Focus on what it is that they seem to be enjoying, not what your alone are afraid of.
Don’t be so quick to integrate everything based upon how it affects you. The reality is, you are pretty much anonymous (in a good way). The majority of the world is neither hostile nor supportive of your situation. They are just kind of ambivalent. Use this to your advantage. You control the level of interaction, ask questions, make jokes, offer support and opinions. It’s relaxing and satisfying to be relevant. That’s where the sense of hopelessness is coming from. Nip it in the bud.

Q: How can i cure my anxiety/depression?
Im 18 years old, and a couple months left before im a daddy, i dont want to end up losing my girl or baby because my dumbass feels worthless and isn’t happy with life:’(

A: If you want to reduce stress and anxiety watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjPcb3eMS6s
the Lil jack method works wonders

Q: how do i cure anxiety and depression without going to the doctor?
i’m getting to the point where i don’t want to go outside as i fainted in town 3 weeks ago and i’m worried it will happen again. the ambulance team checked me out and said i was fine. i did have an eye infection and then i got a tooth absis and it’s left me really weak. any ideas. i do have a serve dust allergy (rhintis) which is really getting me down

A: Go out and face it. Same happened to me – I fainted while out and then didn’t go out again. It really ruined my life! But I started going out and facing it and now things are fine again. Just think positive! Nothing bad will happen. If you start to feel anxious just think positive. You are fine – last time was a one off. Or focus on something else to keep your mind off your feelings.

Start off with small things first if it really bothers you, then do that til you feel comfortable, then try something that makes you more anxious and keep doing that until you feel ok with it. For example, if you don’t want to go outside at all, just force yourself to walk to the end of the street a couple of times a day for a few days. Then try walking a bit further after that and keep repeating it.

Getting over the anxiety will help a lot with the depression.

A doctor or counselor will basically tell you the same thing – they call it CBT. It is self help, but you have to want to do. The only other option is medication and you can get over it without that. Best to at least try first

Q: Anyone here interested on being Spiritual as a cure for their anxiety/depression?
Sometimes psychologiest, psychiatrist doesnt work anymore for that long period of time. So just curious if anyone reach their peacefulness level from suffering.
Not asking to do things spiritually, but has anyone ever done it?

A: I don’t feel, believe or think that anything spiritual can help my mental illnesses and disorders. I have lived and suffered with them for over 25yrs. I have tried it, IT DOES “NOT” WORK! I am still just as mentally ill as I was before if not worse!

Q: How to get my anxiety and depression cure ?
Aches at left temple affecting optic nerve and eye-sight and mental well being.
Irritated easily

A: go out. listen to music. walk. eat veggies and fruits. try holistic-online.com. they have stuff about stress. socialanxietysupport.com is cool. um nolongerlonely, more-selfesteem.com, depression-helper.com,conqueringstress.com, shyunited.com. try every day to list something good about you. and man just indulge yourself once in a while.

Q: What are good ways to somewhat “cure” anxiety and depression without meds?

A: Well, I’ve said it before, but I find that good old fashioned will power is the best way to tackle depression. I know that sounds overly simplistic and I admit that it doesn’t work all the time, but in most cases approaching things with a confident, take charge attitude is the best route to go down.

Life is all about choices. Things are different for everyone, but very few of us have control over the things life throws our way. It’s how we react to those situations, good and bad, that define who we are as people. People say “you can’t change who you are”. That’s crap. With the right attitude and hard work, you can be whoever you want to be. Who is anyone else to dictate how you live your life and the what choices you make? Nobody can decide those things for you but you.

Believe me Madi, I know what feeling depressed feels like. The way I approach life though is that yes, things may not be so great, but it’s up to ME, not anyone else, to change them. That doesn’t mean that you will suddenly get over or forget your problems, it just means that you’re committed to improving your lot in life, and screw whatever anyone else says. If there is one thing I’ve learned from my situation with that girl I’ve told you about, it’s that it’s better to be pissed off and angry than sad. I honestly believe, to borrow a line from Christian Bale in Batman, “It isn’t who we are underneath. It is what we DO that defines us”. That’s something I try to live by.

Luke once gave me two great songs to listen to when I asked a similar question, and I think that they’d be good for you:

“Fine Again” by Seether
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrpcICY2TVY
(I love this song)

and

“Sound of Madness” by Shinedown

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn9LuAmhcXs

I also really like this one for when I’m not feeling my best:
“Fake It” by Seether (the guy in the middle kind of looks like Jeff Hardy)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU3mTLgwmzA

Q: Is there a way to cure severe depression and anxiety without medications?
all the medications have side effects and i’m tired of taking pills. They turn me into a zombie with no sex drive. What should I do?

A: That’s almost like asking how to fight diabetes w/o insulin.

If you have a chemical imbalance, there’s no amount of meditation or whatever you can do.

You can, however, find better meds. You actually sound more like a manic-depressant if you’re playing both sides like that. Mood stabilizers actually don’t kill my sex drive like the old meds did.

Q: Why do trees and forests and mountains cure my depression and anxiety?
When I see them I want to run in them, get away, and be free

A: I’m the EXACT same way!! I am a person who is constantly thinking and stressing, focusing on responsibilities and what I need to be doing WAY too much…and it stresses me to the point of tears at times. But the woods…ahhh, that is my escape.

Those moments where your soul is silent. I call those times stolen moments of pure peace. ) I even have a ring that I wear everyday of a tree, just to remind me to chill. I’ve actually taken to walking around a nearby lake everyday at lunch to chill out. ) It’s worked wonders!

I don’t know what it is about it, I’d like to think that maybe we’re more connected with the Earth, and can’t handle this plastic, stressful, ugly world that people have made for themselves. Glad to hear that I’m not the only one who is like this! )

Q: How can I STOP Panic / Anxiety Attacks & Depression – ANSWERED!!!?
HEY THERE

I have been reading through so many questions on this subject and started my own FREE blog for anyone who is suffering from Anxiety / Panic & / or Depression.

I had Panic & Depression for 16 years, over that time I have come across so many different things that worked for different circumstances and some not so well. Each time I managed to eliminate or at the very least subdue a panic attack they eventually became a non-issue in the sense that I don’t get them anymore!!! I want to save you $$$’s and energy in “some” peoples apparent attempt at helping (if it looks more like a get-rich-quick-scheme, it probably is), check my site out, again, NO Teasers in here, just results that I have used that WORKED!!!

I am also available through this site should you have anymore specific questions you don’t feel have been resolved! Just send me a private message in that site:)

It is: http://joyful-options.blogspot.com/

All the best for your journeys!

Love
Joy:)

A: nothing comes in a bottle nor can you be told. you need to help yourself when you ready. i dont agree with your web page as people who care want to help, and do not need donations to do so

Q: Whats the best working OCD/Depression/ Panic Attacks/ Anxiety medicine?
I am so depressed and I have panic attacks all the time. Also I feel like I am going to lose control at anytime.I get all light headed and I feel like crap. What medicine is the best. I am on Xanax and its not working. Is Zoloft ok?

A: I am a experienced with anxiety because I have now been on the pills 7 years. I took zoloft it seemed to work well if your not sexually active. So I ended up switching to Cymbalta. I never had a panic attack or anxiety again. It takes about a week to two weeks to fully work. The major side effect is dry mouth which you will get and sleepiness. The pill needs to be taken at night. It also helps you fall asleep. The only thing is once you are cured it is very hard to stop taking the medication because the withdrawal symptoms are so strong but it doesn’t seem like you will be cured for a few years.

Q: Anxiety, Depression, Panic Attacks…Help?
Hello, I’ve have been suffering from anxiety, depression, panic attacks, fear of leaving my home etc, since I was about 12 and I’m nearly 19 now. I have seen many many doctors and been on countless varietys of medicine yet nothing seems to help. I am in my house 24 hours a day, about 98% of the year, every year. If I leave or know that I am having to leave to go wherever, I have severe panic attacks which means I get ridiculously painful stomach cramps, diarrhea, excesive sweating, very hot, high blood pressure and more.

With these symptoms it is very hard to even make it to a doctors appointment for help. I just don’t know what to do as the thought of suicide creeps slowly closer and closer the longer this goes on. I’m not the suicidal type but it seems that if say 10 years from now I’m still not progressing, it may become inevitable.

Apart from drugs and counciling what else can be done?

A: Hi sweetie.
I’m 17 years old and suffering from the same exact thing you have as we speak. When was 12 I threw up in public, and it made me terrified to eat in public ever again. Since then I haven’t eaten in a resturant or at someone elses house for the most part. When I got to high school I was always stressed and worried about everything, and eventually this year (my junior year) it finally took over me. I can’t leave the house, and just like you said its so so stressful to even just leave the house because it makes you feel sick. (see with me, it makes me feel like throwing up, which I am terrified of, so its that much harder!)

Im sure you know this, but this kind of anxiety builds up over time. If theres things in your past that have made you stressed out to become this way, maybe confronting them and letting go will help. (like with me, I had a bad fight with a friend and just had to learn to let it go)

Counseling helps. Ive been talking to a specialist and that’s nice and everything, but its such a struggle to get through the day and leave. Maybe you can find a friend to come to your house and talk to you about how youre feeling weekly. See if that helps.

Also- how is the medication helping? what did they put you on?

Set little goals for yourself. For instance, just leave your house and walk into your yard. Spend a few minutes outside. Then the next day, try going for a walk. Then after that, try getting in the car and just sitting in it. Maybe a few weeks later, try actually going for a ride down the street or around the block. Practice these, and maybe that will help you get more comfortable.

Maybe when you start leaving, you could bring something comforting. I know for me, I always have to have something in my hands and I have to be chewing gum. Try it out and see what happens.

If you wanna talk about this, I can relate to you 100%. I have an email, babeyybeeee@yahoo.com . Please don’t be afraid.

Q: Is it possible to have anxiety and panic attacks without depression?
I swear I don’t feel depressed, but I do suffer from panic and anxiety attacks when I’m in public. People accuse me of being depressed though because they say they go hand-in-hand. But I truly do not feel depressed. Is that possible?

A: Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. Yes, it is perfectly normal to have anxiety without depression. The following steps will eliminate (or at least significantly reduce) your panic attacks:

1.Breathe properly – if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks, OCD and anxiety etc. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: www.livinglifetothefull.com

3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really make a difference if you practise often enough (i.e. twice a day). They will also help you sleep better if done at bedtime. You can get free downloads online. E.g.: http://www.studentservices.utas.edu.au/counselling/audio_resources/index.html

With each step practise makes perfect. (i.e. practise the steps every day, not just when you are feeling bad). I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!

Q: panic attacks, anxiety, depression, what meds?
First of all i have no insurance, so daily PhD therarpy or a long drawn out medical testin is out. I suffer from general anxiety, panic attacks that have resulted avoidance behavior to the max.

I’m curious what meds will wok best for me. I might be suffering from depression, I’m not sure.

I’m looking for a medication or medications that do the following.

1. No weight gain like I hear most meds of this nature do.
2. Do not cause severe addiction, or present severe withdrawls upon discontinuation.
3. I like sex, so it should have limite sexual side affects
4. I don’t want a medication that hops you up like cociane, I’ve heard some do this in attempts to reduce depression. No thanks.

Any tips?

The only med I’ve tried before is Xanax, and this was only taken three times per month when full blown panic sets in. I need a med that basically releives panic symptoms, leviates depression and axniet, no addiction, no weight gain, no sexual side affects.

HELP ME PLEASE?

A: I use a full vitamin supplement and take rosehip pills. All organic and can be had at most any vitamin supply shop.

Takes a 2 or 3 weeks of daily use before the full affect is achieved.

Many people with your symptoms are just lacking vitamins or minerals in their body.

No addiction, side effects, weight gain or bad sexual side affects.

Also regular physical activity will help with depression. I forget the exact reason but doing exercise releases something in the body that makes one happy. I am not talking about trying to get a runners high.. just a long walk everyday or sometime working out with everyday items in the house.

For the Panic Attacks and anxiety look for beta blockers.

Check on http://www.amazon.com for natural healing books that relate to your symptoms.

I hate taking doctor ordered meds… rather try to care for myself organically..

No I am not some far out fruitcake. I smoke, drink booze and ride a harley. Just hate chemical answers to everything.

Happy Holidays.

Q: For those of you who take medication for anxiety/depression/panic attacks?
Did the medication help? Was it a noticeable difference? Do you feel like you aren’t the same person anymore (not in a good way)?

A: For me the side effects of the medications were worse than the initial ailment.

However, it might not be as bad for you. Discuss it thoroughly with your doctor

Q: is there any one out there who needs help with mental illness such as depression anxiety panic attacks or any?
form addiction i would like to help or also any physical health issues please contact me @ eloconnor904@yahoo.co.uk thanks hope 2 hear from u soon

A: Maybe she just wants to help. If you’ve ever dealt with anxiety or depression and successfully recovered from these states of mind you want to help other people because that’s how good you feel. Trust me, you feel lucky to be alive after being so low.

Q: Are you chronically ill with Depression, Fatigue, Joint pain and Panic Attacks or Anxiety?.?
Do you ever suffer from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, chronic fatigue and or fibromalgia pain? If so have any or all of these symptoms caused you to be unable to get out of your house or prevent you from driving or loss of desire to do aanywhere?

I was just wondering if anyone could be experiencing any or all of the same symptoms I have. The culmination of depression, CFS/Fibromalgia and anxiiety has caused me to lose interest in anything and I panic at the thoughts of having to get dressed a leave my home. In fact, I do not even look forward to visitors. Am I losing my mind? What is wrong with me? How can I overcome this? I hate to think I have to live like this rest of my life.I do not enjoy TV. I read occassionally or use my computer.

I am on medication for my depression and seeing a couselor but nothing seems to help. I have no energy or desire for anything. I am just sleepy and tired all the time but cannot sleep. How can I overcome this illness?

A: I have been there and done that. In 1990, I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromalgia. I was so tired all the time and my joints hurt and I felt like I had a bad case of the flu everday. After serveal months the sever depression kicked in.

I did not want to get dressed or leave my house either. But, I had to force myself. There were days when I felt I could sleep all day and others when I could not sleep at all. Vocation Rehab sent me to a great psychiatrist who had to try several different anii-depressants until he found the right combination. He also gave me something to help me sleep and something for the pain.

Once all of that began to get undercontrol so did my emotions. I started taking long week ends and vacations to the beach and I began to start feeling normal again. During this time at the beach, I had time to meditate and pray and work through my thoughts. I began to feel guilty for acting so selfish when there are so many people around me who are so much worse off and never complain. I also joined an organization called “NAMI”. It is the National Assoc Mental Illness. They meet once or twice a month. They have a group for those suffering from depression and a seperate one for the care takers of those of us who are ill. It was helpful to me and my husband.

I still get bad days and times, but I try and make myself go no matter how I feel. My doctor also explained how improtant diet and exercise is and even more is getting lots of sun light. She explained that was probably one of the reasons I felt better at the beach. We finally bought a small condo their and I go often for a few days at the time.

But, you do not have to have a beach house or even go to the beach to get lots of sun light and waling is great for your health too. Just hang in there. Things will get better. Sometimes we need a little attitude adjustment!…..lol -/
